Abstract
We report a novel alternating copolymerization of epoxides and N-carboxyanhydrides as a direct synthetic route to polyesters bearing hydrogen-bonding motifs in their main chain, thereby enabling the straightforward synthesis of a previously inaccessible class of poly(amino ester)s featuring secondary amines. Conventional strategies for preparing functionalized polyesters are confined to side-chain modifications, often requiring postpolymerization functionalization to introduce versatile functionalities. However, our synthetic approach directly incorporates secondary amine moieties into the polymer backbone and allows the characterization of the corresponding hydrogen bonds. Through a combination of experimental spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that hydrogen bonding from the amine moieties plays a critical role in activating the epoxide monomers, a mechanistic insight that distinguishes this system from conventional copolymerizations. Furthermore, we characterize the robust hydrogen-bonding network within these polymers that contributes to their high thermal stability, with Td,5% (temperature at 5% weight loss) values reaching up to 315 °C. Finally, the polymers undergo selective base-catalyzed hydrolysis of the ester linkages, demonstrating their degradability, and the polymerization is compatible with a bifunctional epoxide bearing a poly(ethylene glycol) chain to afford a water-soluble amphiphilic graft copolymer.
Aliphatic polyamides are indispensable engineering materials, yet the development of chemically recyclable variants remains challenging due to their strong interchain hydrogen bonding and high crystallinity. Here, we report a monomer design strategy based on α-gem-dialkyl β-lactams that enables the controlled synthes...
The efficient and facile introduction of polar functionalities into the backbone of nonpolar polydienes remains a longstanding goal in polymer science. However, existing approaches largely rely on functional diene derivatives or multistep post-polymerization functionalization procedures, which often suffer from catalys...

This study explores the synthesis and application of a novel multiamino-functional siloxane resin (SR-T-NH2) as a sustainable and high-performance curing agent for epoxy-siloxane hybrid materials. The siloxane hardener was synthesized via controlled hydrolysis and condensation of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, with 1H...

Sequence-controlled vinyl polymers provide unique opportunities to investigate how monomer sequence influences material properties; however, access to structurally diverse alternating copolymers remains challenging. Here, we report a molecular design strategy that introduces a twisted-amide structure into side-chain...

In sp3 carbon-chain polymers, side-chain functionality can be readily diversified, whereas systematic control over side-chain spacing within the constitutional repeating unit (CRU) remains largely unexplored. Here, we report malonic ester synthesis–type polymerization (MESP), an A2 + B2 polycondensation that exploits...
In this work, glycidyl methacrylate (GlyMA) copolymers have been synthesized together with methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a comonomer via living anionic polymerization. Under mild and precisely chosen reaction conditions in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at −78 °C, the ring-opening and crosslinking reaction of the epoxide could b...
