Abstract
Developing cost-effective and highly efficient Lewis pair (LP) systems represents a powerful strategy for achieving living/controlled polymerization of (meth)acrylates, enabling the synthesis of functional polar vinyl polymers with diverse structures and topologies. Herein, a new class of strong nucleophilic tetra-hydropyrimidin-2-ylidenes (THPEs) bearing mono-, dual-, tri-, tetra-, and hexa-initiating units was successfully synthesized on a multigram scale in a two-step synthetic procedure. By combining with bulky and modestly acidic Lewis acids, a series of multi-initiating THPE-based LP systems were effectively prepared for the living polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), thus affording the corresponding polymers with predicted molecular weight (Mn up to 285.3 kg mol–1), narrow dispersity value (Ð as low as 1.08), and tunable topology (2-, 3-, 4- and 6-arm). Furthermore, by integrating these multi-initiating LP systems with the unique compounded sequence control strategy, one-step polymerization of MMA or isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) with 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) was developed for the synthesis of all-(meth)acrylic triblock thermoplastic elastomers with diverse topologies and well-defined sequences. Mechanical investigations demonstrated that 3-arm star-shaped elastomers significantly outperformed other topological architectures in both tensile strength and elongation at break, while IBOMA-derived elastomers exhibited superior service temperatures and enhanced elastic recovery compared to their MMA-derived counterparts.
The practical applications of closed-loop recyclable polymers demand monomers that are readily accessible from simple feedstocks while enabling controlled polymerization and tunable physical properties. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of 5-phenyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one (PhDO) from methyl glycolate and styrene oxide v...

Sequential polymerization provides an effective strategy for integrating distinct polymerization mechanisms within a single reaction system and constructing multicomponent polymeric materials. In this work, cyclopentene (CP) and 2,3-dihydrofuran (DHF) were employed as model monomers to investigate feed-order-dependen...

Controlled alcoholysis of the cationic alkylzinc complexes [(DiPPBIP)ZnR]+[BArF4]- (ArF = 3,5-C6H3(CF3)2) (1) generates a DiPPBIP-supported cationic zinc alkoxide that acts as an efficient initiator for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone. Although the alkyl precursors are sufficiently Lewis acidic...

In this study, we present a methodology for direct C─C bond formation using renewable primary alcohols as alkylating agents, catalyzed by base metal-derived Zn(II) complexes. We utilized two well-defined phosphine-free NNN bis-iminopyridine pincer ligands (L1 and L2) for the synthesis of zinc(II) catalysts C1 and C2, w...

Combining polymerization-induced branching (PIB) with controlled radical polymerization (CRP) enables regulated and site-specific synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. However, it remains a challenge to apply this strategy to the synthesis of hydrophobic/oil-soluble hyperbranched polymers with important application va...

Although iron has emerged as an earth-abundant alternative for 1,3-diene coordinative polymerization, stereoselective iron systems remain uncommon and are often associated with limited catalytic activity. Here, we report three iron(II) complexes supported by 1,1-diaryl-N-(quinolin-8-yl)methanimine ligands, which upon...
