Abstract
Tissue manipulation is a fundamental and frequently performed sub-task in robotic surgery, but its automation remains challenging because soft tissue exhibits nonlinear deformation and complex contact interactions with rigid instruments. This work presents a simulator-in-the-loop, samplingbased MPC framework that uses CRESSim, a GPU-accelerated Unity-PhysX 5 surgical simulation environment, directly as a black-box predictive model inside a Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) controller. At each control step, MPPI samples candidate gripper command sequences, evaluates them through forward rollouts in the simulator, and updates the control sequence without requiring analytical tissue dynamics, Jacobians, or local linearizations. We evaluated the approach in planar and volumetric tissue-manipulation tasks, including targetpoint placement and tissue triangulation. The results show target-point positioning errors within the millimeter range, with representative trials reaching below 2 mm, demonstrating the feasibility of using a surgical physics simulator as the predictive model for closed-loop autonomous soft-tissue manipulation.
Closed-loop evaluation of surgical robots requires tissue that deforms, can be grasped and lifted, and reproduces the anatomy in which the robot will operate. We present a simulator in which this tissue is reconstructed from a fixed-view RGB-D recording of the surgical field, composited to remove the instruments, close...

Virtual model control (VMC) provides compliant trajectory execution, but sustained contact loads can produce residual positional error. This study evaluated the sequential development of VMC augmented with integral control for powered dry-bone resection and assessed the effects of end-effector stabilisation, spatial ca...

Subject-specific finite element analysis (FEA) can estimate tissue-level stress, strain, contact pressure, and load transfer in the knee, but building and solving a new model for each anatomy, activity, or treatment scenario remains time-consuming. This narrative review examines how knee biomechanical simulation has pr...

Accurate soft tissue simulation is essential for surgical training, pre-operative planning, and haptic feedback systems. While learning-based surrogate models trained on data using the finite element method (FEM) offer a promising path to real-time inference, their reliability depends on well-calibrated constitutive mo...

Indirect manipulation of deep-seated deformable anatomy inaccessible to the robot is challenging in robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RAMIS) because intervening tissues spatially filter deformation transmission. Passive observations can be ambiguous because the Decoupled and Blocked modes may produce similar m...
