Intelligent Measurement and Condition-Monitoring Framework for Underground Aviation Fuel Hydrant Networks in Saudi Airports

Sep 2026 · Global academic journal of economics and business · 0 citations

Abstract

The underground aviation fuel hydrant systems have to tightly contain hydrocarbons, ensure that the fuel quality remains strict, and are difficult to reach because of the physical limitations involved. They are also influenced by the changes that take place when aircraft are refuelling. For these reasons, the method needed to monitor such networks is different from that applied to long-distance oil pipelines. This article looks at the research carried out between 2020 and 2025 on a number of topics including pipeline leak detection, structural health monitoring, fibre-optic sensing, acoustic emission, hydraulic analytics, sensor fusion, machine learning, and digital twins. On the basis of this research it proposes a framework tailored for airports in Saudi Arabia. The framework follows a step-by-step procedure: the pressure and flow data establish the hydraulic context, while acoustic, vibration, fibre-optic, hydrocarbon-sensitive and corrosion sensors each contribute separate evidence. Edge analytics are used to filter out operational noise, and then a fusion stage combines all the data to estimate the presence, location, severity and degree of degradation of any leak, as well as how confident the estimates are. A digital model links these results to the asset's history, inspection records, maintenance work and operational data. The framework places particular emphasis on the buried pipes underneath the aprons, the hydrant pits, the branch connections, the interfaces between the soil and concrete, access to the sensors, controlling false alarms, and distinguishing between the normal changes that occur during refuelling and abnormal leaks. The review also connects the framework to the EI 1560 best practices and to Saudi Vision 2030, an initiative which aims at achieving reliable, safe, environmentally responsible and digitally capable airports as air traffic increases. The key point is that Saudi airports should not depend on single-sensor leak detection; rather, a risk-based, multi-physics, data-fused approach is more reliable for providing early warnings, enabling condition-based maintenance, reducing product loss, and improving the predictive management of the hydrant network.

Design of a multi-source monitoring scheme and data fusion method for in-service pressure vessels in the coastal environment

The coupling effect of high humidity, high salinity, and alternating loads in coastal environments poses complex corrosion-fatigue damage risks to pressure vessels in gas supply systems. The traditional periodic inspection model cannot provide real-time detection of early damage. To address the non-destructive constrai...

REAL-TIME FUEL QUALITY MEASUREMENT AND AUTOMATED COMPLIANCE MONITORING FOR AVIATION REFUELLING SYSTEMS IN SAUDI ARABIA

The approach to quality control in the area of aviation refuelling is shifting from that of periodic sampling to one that makes use of a continuous method relying on a large amount of data, but the operational difficulties extend well beyond the simple installation of one sensor. In order to ensure safety, a system has...

Digital Transformation of Aviation Fuel Inspection and Calibration Systems in Saudi Arabia

—Digital transformation is having a significant effect on quality assurance within safety-critical infrastructure, but at the moment, aviation-fuel inspection and calibration still rely in part on paper records, separate laboratory systems, periodic verification, and manual transcription. This study looks at how digita...

Intelligent Condition Monitoring of Railway Signalling Lamps and Track Circuits Using LoRaWAN and Multi-Sensor Data Fusion

Railway signalling lamps and track circuits are among the highest-consequence assets in rail operations because undetected degradation can precipitate signal-passed-at-danger (SPAD) events and collisions. On Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), as on most Sub-Saharan African railways, maintenance of these assets re...

Intelligent big data-driven system for predicting gas-dynamic phenomena in underground mines

This paper develops a data-integration model for early assessment of gas-dynamic hazards in underground coal workings. Gas measurements are considered together with ventilation, microseismic, geophysical, and production parameters rather than as independent alarm signals. The framework assigns four operating states:...
