Abstract

ABSTRACT Soil moisture data improves the accuracy of remotely sensed surface soil moisture evaluations, as water resources, agriculture, climate, and ecosystems are impacted by land-atmosphere interactions. This study aimed to examine the retrieved soil moisture data and its correlation with rainfall to analyze the regional interdependence between the two variables. Both soil moisture measurements from Google Earth Engine and rainfall records from ground-based stations were analyzed from the year 2000 to 2021. It was observed that the relationship between soil moisture and rainfall follows a polynomial function and that there is a strong positive correlation between the two, with a Pearson r value of 0.86, which suggests that soil moisture increases with rainfall. Additionally, the relationship was found to be climate dependent, with stronger correlations in humid and temperate regions, and weaker correlations in arid and cold climates. Regions in the north and central parts of the country, where rainfall was abundant, showed a stronger correlation as compared to the desert and arid regions with less rainfall, which showed weak or no significant correlation. Furthermore, it was discovered that during periods of heavy rainfall, there is an increase in the rate of groundwater recharge and surface water flow, which are vital for the conservation of local water resources. These outcomes emphasize the need to focus on the complex relationship between soil moisture and rainfall for efficient water resource management, particularly in areas of diverse vegetation and climates.

Drought-induced soil moisture declines in Andean catchments inferred from satellite-derived ground displacement

The 2023–2024 drought reduced water availability worldwide, yet its impacts on soil moisture remain unknown in ungauged Andean catchments. Therefore, we assessed drought-induced soil moisture changes across seven catchments in Ecuador using a multivariable approach that integrates Sentinel-1 A SAR interferometry (InS...

Multi-Layer Soil Moisture Variability and Its Hydroclimatic Controls in Tajikistan, Central Asia

Tajikistan is highly vulnerable to climate change and depends heavily on agriculture, making soil moisture dynamics critical for water and food security. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of soil moisture variability across four depth layers (0–10 cm, 10–40 cm, 40–100 cm, and 100–200 cm) from 2000 to 2021...

Climatic variability and surface water dynamics in a hilly region of northeast India: Implications for soil and water conservation in Longding district, Arunachal Pradesh

Climatic variability plays a crucial role in influencing soil moisture regimes and surface water availability in the hill ecosystems of Northeast India. This study examines the impact of long-term variations in rainfall and temperature on surface water dynamics in Longding District, Arunachal Pradesh. Multitemporal cli...

Rainfall structure and modelled surface soil moisture in relation to agricultural response in rainfed lands of eastern Sudan

Dryland farming can be exposed to markedly different rainfall conditions within seasons receiving similar total rainfall. This study examined rainfall structure, modelled surface soil moisture, and administrative agricultural response in Gedaref State, eastern Sudan, during 1982–2020 using daily CHIRPS rainfall, monthl...

State-dependent drought propagation from soil moisture to vegetation under a non-stationary climate

Drought propagation from soil moisture to vegetation is a complex process influenced by ecosystem characteristics and climate. The combined effects of ecosystem characteristics and a non-stationary climate on this process remain poorly understood. In this study, the dynamics of drought propagation across Iran from...
