Abstract This essay examines the theoretical underpinning and methodological implication of integrating transdisciplinarity into teacher education to strengthen public policy in education to address the complex socio-environmental challenges of the 21st century. Drawing on complexity theory and transformative learning frameworks, we argue that traditional disciplinary boundaries are increasingly insufficient for tackling multifaceted issues such as climate change, social inequality, and technological advancement. Transdisciplinarity, by integrating diverse knowledge systems including scientific, ancestral, and artistic wisdom, offers a more holistic framework for understanding to these complexities. This approach fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills in teacher education, enabling them to develop innovative pedagogical strategies that bridge knowledge gaps and promote holistic student learning. The essay concludes by highlighting the crucial role of transdisciplinarity in shaping education policy that empowers teachers as facilitators of knowledge sharing and agents of positive social and environmental change.
This study provides a comprehensive investigation into the evolving structural matrix connecting the contemporary teacher, systems of teacher education, and the fundamental concept of pedagogic responsibility. Positioned within the dynamic structural changes of twenty-first-century education most notably defined by India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the global expansion of artificial intelligence—the research examines how teacher identity, professional ethics, and classroom practice are being fundamentally reconfigured. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates historical policy analysis, theoretical tracking of cognitive models, and socio-philosophical critiques, this paper outlines how teacher education frameworks must transition from mechanical, instrumental skill-building toward reflective, values-oriented, and human-centered pedagogies. The analysis underscores that pedagogic responsibility is not a static set of rules but a dynamic commitment spanning ethical, academic, social, inclusive, and emotional dimensions. Ultimately, this study offers actionable systemic strategies for curriculum reform, continuous professional development, and the ethical integration of digital tools, ensuring that educators remain equipped to foster equitable, democratic, and deeply humanized learning ecologies.

Higher education must move beyond traditional knowledge-transmission models to meet the demands of rapidly changing knowledge societies. This article explores the integration of student-centered pedagogy and Open Knowledge Systems as a framework for transforming university education. Student-centered pedagogy promotes active learner participation, while Open Knowledge Systems support accessibility, collaboration, transparency, and inclusive knowledge creation. The study emphasizes reforms in curriculum, assessment, faculty development, governance, digital infrastructure, and institutional culture. In the context of India’s National Education Policy 2020 and UNESCO’s vision of inclusive knowledge societies, this integrated approach can help universities become equitable, innovative, and collaborative knowledge communities that promote critical thinking, research competence, social responsibility, and lifelong learning.

Climate change demonstrates one of the most crucial global predicaments of the 21st century, necessitating imperative educational responses to capacitate learners with the information, aptitudes, and principles essential for sustainable action. Its infusion into the school curriculum is disjointed and inadequately coordinated. This study examined the integration of climate change education across the school curriculum, placing focus on its importance and methods. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was employed with academic articles extracted from several academic databases such as WOS, Scopus, DOAJ, and IBSS. Data were analysed thematically pinpointing recurring patterns and research gaps. The findings show that climate change education plays a transformative role in preparing learners with ecological knowledge, critical thinking, and socio-ecological accountability. Additionally, methods that can be used to integrate climate change education across school curriculum include participatory, experiential, and place-based learning, inquiry-based learning teacher training and curriculum leadership models, cross-disciplinary, curriculum integration, localized content and multidisciplinary approaches and community-based learning, and extracurricular activities. It was recommended that a holistic continuing professional development workshop for teachers be encouraged to improve their climate education knowledge to be effective. Furthermore, experiential, inquiry-based approaches was recommended to bridge theory and practice.

While global discourse increasingly demands environmental stewardship, contemporary educational frameworks often relegate sustainability to theoretical, compartmentalized segments of curriculum. This paper addresses the critical necessity of embedding systemic sustainability across primary and secondary school operations, physical infrastructures, and pedagogical models. Utilizing a structured, three-tiered framework—comprising the ecological, socio-cultural, and socio-economic pillars—we explore systemic challenges and propose actionable solutions tailored for localized school systems. Special emphasis is given to rural-urban transitional contexts, such as those within Punjab, Pakistan, demonstrating how localized community-school alignment, place-based environmental training, and cost-effective waste circularity models can bridge the gap between academic theory and community-led green practice. The research advocates for transformative policy and professional training programs that empower educators to transition from passive teachers of natural sciences to active coordinators of systemic ecological change.

Abstract This paper presents a two-stage scoping review of 67 studies published between 2010 and 2025, mapping the development of curriculum and pedagogy in climate change education (CCE), and serves as the introduction to a special issue of the Journal of Environmental Education that examines the state of curriculum and pedagogy in climate change education (CCE). The review identifies trends across theoretical framing, policy alignment, curricular design, and teacher and student perspectives. Findings show that CCE research is expanding but remains emergent, characterized predominantly by qualitative, descriptive work situated in formal education, especially university. Limited theorization, scarce policy-focused scholarship, and few evaluative or mixed-methods studies highlight key gaps. The eight papers included in this special issue address some of these gaps by advancing innovative pedagogical approaches, new curriculum designs, and insights into learner and teacher dispositions.

This article critically examines Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within teacher education, considering its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. Adopting a theoretical-critical approach, this study is based on a critical narrative review of national and international publications from 2015 to 2024, combined with thematic analysis. Forty-two works were selected from databases including Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal interrelated gaps across multiple dimensions that hinder the effective implementation of ESD. Conceptually, an anthropocentric and economistic bias predominates, accompanied by a lack of epistemological reflection on alternative frameworks such as planetary health. In the pedagogical dimension, behaviorist approaches emphasize individual actions without critically addressing socioeconomic structures, thereby weakening interdisciplinarity. Institutionally, resistance persists toward breaking with rigid disciplinary curricula, alongside insufficient support for transdisciplinary practices. Politically, the study identifies a disconnect between Brazil’s National Common Curricular Base (Base Nacional Comum Curricular — BNCC) and the effective integration of environmental themes, as well as the hegemony of a competency-based neoliberal logic that depoliticizes education. These gaps are particularly evident in teacher education, which lacks robust curricular components and adequate professional development opportunities. Critical environmental education emerges as a transformative perspective by fostering ecological awareness and socio-environmental justice. The study concludes that overcoming these challenges requires strengthening critical, interdisciplinary, and territorially contextualized training practices that integrate scientific, social, and ethical-political knowledge, thereby preparing educators to transform the structures that perpetuate the socio-environmental crisis.
