TL;DR

Low seroprevalence likely reflects the inadequacy of natural immunity and absence of routine varicella vaccination, warranting larger seroprevalence studies and future research on the need for priority immunisation for this high-risk population.

Abstract

Background and objectives Varicella-zoster (VZV) virus infection can be severe in children with nephrotic syndrome. Lack of varicella vaccination through the national immunisation programme in India leaves many vulnerable to infection. We conducted this study to document the seroprevalence of Varicella antibodies in patients with nephrotic syndrome. Methods This cross-sectional study (Oct 2024-May 2025) was conducted at a tertiary-care teaching hospital in India, in children (1-18 y) with nephrotic syndrome (both steroid-sensitive and steroid-resistant) in disease remission. Serum VZV IgG antibodies were measured using the EUROIMMUN ELISA kit; titres ≥100 IU/L were considered seroprotective. Results 100 patients were enrolled (median age 8 y). None had received varicella vaccination, and only two reported prior infection. Overall seroprotection was 22% with a geometric mean titre of 9.472 IU/L [median (IQR) 7.59 (3.35; 73.38) IU/L]. No significant difference was observed in titres between steroid-sensitive and steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (P=0.532), but seroprotection increased with age (11.1% in <5 y to 33.3% in >10 y). Interpretation and conclusions Low seroprevalence likely reflects the inadequacy of natural immunity and absence of routine varicella vaccination, warranting larger seroprevalence studies and future research on the need for priority immunisation for this high-risk population.

Nationwide Multicenter Laboratory-Based Analysis of Varicella-Zoster Virus IgG and IgM Seropositivity in Korea, 2014-2024.

This analysis demonstrated persistently high VZV IgG immunity in Korean adults but identified a persistent early childhood immunity gap with a recent age shift, which highlights the need for standardized seroepidemiologic monitoring and can inform vaccination policy evaluation in Korea.

Seroprevalence and Molecular Characterisation of Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infections in Children at a Tertiary Care Centre in Rural Maharashtra, India.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the foremost viral cause of acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs) in children under five years of age, yet surveillance data from rural India remain conspicuously scarce. This cross-sectional study simultaneously characterised RSV seroprevalence and active molecular infection i...

Interactions of infection history with vaccine immune responses in pediatric patients with Kawasaki disease

We aimed to assess the influence of infection history in pediatric patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) on vaccine immune responses in the convalescence stage. In this study, a total of 298 pediatric patients who were diagnosed with KD between January 2021 and December 2024 and completed follow-up were includ...

Waning Measles Immunity and Sustained Rubella Seroprotection Among Adults in Istanbul, Türkiye

A significant measles immunity gap exists among younger adults in Türkiye, with Measles IgG seropositivity declining from 78.4% in 2014–2019 to 62.6% in 2022, consistent with a cohort effect whereby vaccine-era cohorts exhibit lower protection than older adults with naturally acquired immunity.

Viral seropositivity in a Brazilian cohort of patients with multiple sclerosis: A retrospective descriptive study.

BACKGROUND Defining viral serology in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients has become increasingly more relevant, given the potential association between viruses and MS, along with the recent introduction of new immunosuppressive treatments.
