Beyond Greenwashing: Governing Sustainable AI for the Common Good Through a Virtue Ethics and Human-Centered AI Framework

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes deeply embedded in human and organizational life, debates about Sustainable AI demand renewed ethical reflection. Current approaches often remain fragmented—separating AI for Sustainability, such as climate-mitigation applications, from the Sustainability of AI, including the intensive resource use and discriminatory effects of AI systems themselves—and lack a coherent moral foundation. This article addresses Sustainable AI as an integrated ethical concept, rather than focusing narrowly on either strand, and reframes it through the lens of virtue ethics, emphasizing human flourishing, moral agency, and the pursuit of the common good. Complementing this perspective with the Human-Centered AI (HCAI) paradigm, we develop an integrated governance framework that incorporates MacIntyrean categories of practices, institutions, and traditions while explicitly addressing the environmental, socio-cultural, economic, and organizational dimensions of the common good. In this framework, these four dimensions identify the substantive goods that Sustainable AI should protect and promote, while the micro (practices), meso (organizational and governance structures), and macro (cultural-historical traditions) levels specify the constructive conditions through which such goods are discerned, coordinated, and sustained over time. The framework illustrates how virtues can guide the responsible design, deployment, use, and oversight of AI systems. Our contribution is threefold: we advance Sustainable AI ethics by grounding it in virtue ethics and the common good; we extend business ethics by introducing a virtue–HCAI approach to governance; and we bridge theory and practice through a multi-level model that offers conceptual clarity and ethical orientation for long-term human flourishing.

Ethics as Technology: AI Ethics as Technologies of Governance and the Case for STS

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a central focus of ethical deliberation in reports, guidelines, and official statements issued by technology companies, governments, and international organizations. This paper analyzes five influential documents representing the broad field of AI ethics as a ‘sociotechnical imaginary’: a collectively held, institutionalized, and publicly performed vision of the future. It argues that this imaginary transforms ethics into a technology of governance through which governments, international organizations, and corporations present AI as an inevitable, controllable, and desirable future. The paper critically examines the limitations of this approach, particularly its claims to universality, which treat both AI and ethics as abstract, cultureless objects detached from time and place. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies (STS) and philosophy, the paper outlines alternative pathways toward historically, geographically, and politically situated forms of ethics, in which technological futures remain collective, contested, and open rather than confined to trajectories presented as inevitable.

Embedding AI Risk Governance into Knowledge-Based Organizations: A Path Towards Systemic Sustainability

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly embedded in the structures of knowledge-based organizations, the governance of AI-related risks is emerging as a critical factor for long-term systemic sustainability. This paper explores how AI risk governance can be effectively integrated into the epistemological and structural foundations of such organizations through the lens of fourth-order cybernetics. This theoretical framework emphasizes reflexivity, ethical co-construction, and multilevel feedback involving both human and technical agents. Rather than treating governance as a static set of compliance measures, the proposed model presents it as a dynamic and participatory process. Four core principles are introduced: multilevel feedback, contextual ethics, recursive governance, and the inclusion of marginalized perspectives. These principles support the embedding of AI governance into decision-making and knowledge management systems. The paper contributes to responsible innovation discourse and offers a conceptual pathway for resilient and ethically aligned AI implementation in complex organizational environments.
