Abstract

Based on daily precipitation observations from six national meteorological stations in the Zhangye region from 1960 to 2023, this study examines the spatiotemporal evolution and possible driving factors of extreme precipitation using four ETCCDI-recommended indices (SDII, R10mm, R95p, and RX1day). Trends were evaluated using linear regression and the Mann–Kendall test, with Sen’s slope estimation. The results reveal significant (p < 0.05) increasing trends in both the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation, with a shift from low-intensity, low-frequency to high-intensity, high-variability modes. Temporally, all indices exhibited a step-like surge around 2000, entering a period of high-level oscillation, with extreme characteristics amplified during strong El Niño years. Spatially, a distinct “higher in the south, lower in the north” pattern prevails among the six stations, with the southern Qilian Mountains being the primary contributor and the central plains showing a bimodal distribution, reflecting joint modulation by westerly troughs and local strong convection. The intensification is linked to enhanced atmospheric water vapor, northward penetration of the East Asian summer monsoon, and topographically forced lifting. While alleviating drought stress, this trend substantially elevates the risk of flash floods and debris flows in mountainous areas. It should be noted that the spatial patterns are derived from six stations and should be interpreted as inter-station comparisons rather than continuous spatial fields.

Spatiotemporal variability and trends of precipitation, temperature, and evapotranspiration in the Muger sub-basin of the Abbay basin Ethiopia

This study used time series data from 1980 to 2022 to investigate spatiotemporal changes and trends of precipitation, temperature, and evapotranspiration in Muger sub-basin. The coefficient of variation (CV), precipitation concentration index (PCI), and seasonality index (SAI) were used to assess variability, while...

Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Trends of Climate Extremes in and Around the Yunnan Reach of the Nujiang River Basin

Daily observations from 14 stations and ERA5 reanalysis were used to examine temperature, precipitation, and wind extremes in and around the Yunnan reach of the Nujiang River Basin during 1991–2020. Twelve station indices, two reanalysis-derived wind indices, and circulation diagnostics describe their spatial, seasonal...

Spatio-Temporal Evolution and Circulation Links of Summer Precipitation in Central Asia: Roles of Pacific and Atlantic Sea-Surface Temperature Modes

Central Asia, as a typical arid and semi-arid region, experiences precipitation variability that critically influences water security and ecological balance. Based on ERA5-Land reanalysis data and 14 large-scale climate indices from 1980 to 2025, this study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of summer precipitat...

Response of NDVI spatiotemporal variation to meteorological factors in arid areas

This study investigated the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of vegetation coverage (NDVI) in the Kekeya project area and its response to meteorological factors over the past 3 decades. On the basis of Landsat remote sensing data from 1993 to 2023 and meteorological variables including air temperature, precipit...

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Regional Heavy Rainfall Events in Guangdong, South China: Intensification and Expansion Since the Early 1990s

Regional heavy rainfall events (RHREs) have shown an increasing trend in Guangdong Province, South China, in recent decades. In order to retrieve a reliable evaluation of the RHREs in this region, this paper proposes an improved method for assessing the overall strength of each RHRE and a workflow for recognising its...
