Abstract

Aim of study: Efficient recycling of digestates in livestock systems is a way for maintaining satisfactory crop yields and reducing environmental pollution. Substitution of mineral N fertilisers with digestates was demonstrated under field conditions for silage maize (Zea mays L.), while studies evaluating digestate’s fertiliser efficacy for legume crops relevant for the livestock sector, namely alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), remain limited. This study evaluated digestate’s efficacy in enhancing crop yield of silage maize, alfalfa forage and soybean grain under irrigated field conditions in northern Italy. Area of study: Mediterranean North climate (Lombardy Region, northern Italy). Material and methods: During the cropping seasons 2020 to 2022, field experiments were conducted involving the application of digestates, mineral fertilisers, and digestates enriched with microbial-based biostimulants. The effect of each treatment was evaluated considering two varieties of each crop, measuring the yield of maize silage, alfalfa forage and soybean grain. Main results: Digestates providing 250 kg N ha–1 to maize, and 50 kg N ha–1 to soybean resulted in equal yield compared to mineral fertiliser. The response of the three crops to fertilisation treatments was consistent between years and varieties. The lack of response of alfalfa to digestate did not support the application of digestates to this crop. Finally, the addition of biostimulant increased maize yield in only one location, requiring further evaluation under field conditions. Conclusions: Liquid digestate can effectively substitute urea in maize fertilization, is beneficial for soybean at low application rates, but is not recommended for alfalfa under high-fertility conditions.

Using treated pig slurry as substitute of mineral-P basal fertilization of maize: effects on early plant growth and soil properties

Agricultural valorization of animal slurry is considered a priority in some countries, but that practice needs to be carried out minimizing potential environmental impacts, allowing an improvement in soil quality, without a reduction in productivity. A greenhouse experiment used a Haplic Arenosol, fertilized with raw...

Is mineral nutrient concentration of soybean, maize, and wheat grain affected by cropping sequence and agronomic management?

Producers in the Argentine Pampas often fail to fully replenish the nutrients extracted by crops, leading to unsustainable soil fertility management. The objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate grain yield, mineral nutrient concentration, and extraction for maize ( Zea mays L.), wheat ( Triticum aestivum...

Influence of Biochar and Inorganic Fertilizer on Soil Properties, Growth, Yield and Quality Parameters of French Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important legume vegetable crop; the integrated use of biochar with inorganic fertilisers may improve soil properties, nutrient availability and nutrient-use efficiency. Therefore, evaluating this approach is important for achieving sustainable and productive French bean cultiv...

Agronomic Performance of Rice–Wheat Intercropping in an Upland Area of the Bouaké Region, Central Côte d’Ivoire

In the context of climate change, innovative rice-based cropping systems represent a sustainable approach to improving  agricultural productivity. Given the reduction in cultivable land and declining soil fertility, assessing the effects of intercropping under different fertilisation regimes is essential in order to im...

Evaluation of the effect of organic manure, inorganic fertilisers and bio-inoculants on plant growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The declining productivity of rice and deterioration of soil health associated with conventional rice cultivation necessitate the adoption of sustainable nutrient management strategies. Field experiments were conducted during the Kharif seasons of 2021–22 and 2022–23 at the Students’ Instructional Farm, Chandra Shekhar...

Evaluation of Liquid Digestates Derived from Different Biogas Feedstocks on Physicochemical Properties and Heavy Metal Contents of Soil and Wheat Production under Central Anatolian Conditions

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of liquid digestates (LDs) derived from different biogas feedstocks on soil physical and chemical properties, heavy metal contents and wheat production under the semi-arid calcareous soil conditions of the Central Anatolian Region of Türkiye. The field experiment was est...
