The results suggest that SDMA may not be a sensitive indicator of renal function in Asian elephants.

Abstract

Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) has been reported to be potentially more sensitive in identifying renal impairment than blood urea nitrogen and creatinine in dogs and cats. SDMA has been evaluated in multiple domestic and zoologic species but has not been previously evaluated in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). The objective of this study was to determine if there is a positive association between serum SDMA and creatinine in Asian elephants, calculate normal population-derived reference intervals for a point-of-care analyzer and a reference laboratory analyzer, and determine if SDMA values are elevated in Asian elephants with histopathologic evidence of renal disease. Serum SDMA was analyzed from managed elephants in OK (n = 30) during routine clinical evaluations and from elephants with histopathologic evidence of nephropathies, including nephritis, renal fibrosis, or urolithiasis (n = 10) by reviewing medical records or analyzing frozen serum samples. There was a poor correlation between SDMA and creatinine irrespective of the method (R = 0.02–0.22). The normal reference interval for SDMA with the reference laboratory analyzer in healthy Asian elephants was 4.1–10.9 µg/dl, and it was 6–16 µg/dl using the point-of-care analyzer. Elephants with clinically significant histopathologic nephropathies (4 of 10) had SDMA values between 7 and 23 µg/dl, with only two of four exceeding the upper limit of the reference interval for the reference laboratory analyzer. These results suggest that SDMA may not be a sensitive indicator of renal function in Asian elephants.

Plasma Dimethylarginine Concentrations in Dogs With Large Cell Lymphoma or Hemangiosarcoma: A Prospective Observational Study.

Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) are endogenous methylated arginine derivatives associated with endothelial dysfunction and tumour progression in humans. Their relevance in canine oncology remains unclear. This prospective study aimed to assess plasma concentrations of ADMA and S...

Normoalbuminuric and albuminuric diabetic kidney disease exhibit divergent renal proteomic characteristics: implications for management.

BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is complex. Normoalbuminuric diabetic kidney disease (NADKD) is a special subtype of DKD that often progresses insidiously without detectable albuminuria, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Its pathogenesis remains unclear. Proteomic analysis of re...

A-133 Routine Chemistry Overlooks MASLD: A Metabolomic Assessment Using OWLiver

Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is highly prevalent yet frequently underrecognized in clinical practice. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) are commonly used screening tools; however, their sensitivity is limited, as patients with clinically signif...

Evaluation of urinary biomarkers for detection of renal tubular injury in Vipera berus-envenomated and critically ill dogs with and without clinically apparent acute kidney injury

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in dogs has high mortality and early diagnosis is essential, but traditional markers are not sensitive enough to detect renal injury in the absence of decreased glomerular filtration rate. The objective of this study was to compare urinary cystatin C (uCysC), N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (uNAG...

Diagnostic value of serum proenkephalin as a biomarker of renal dysfunction in Iraqi patients with chronic kidney disease

Objective: To evaluate serum proenkephalin (PENK) levels in Iraqi patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and examine its diagnostic performance and correlation with conventional renal function markers. Methods: This case-control study included 45 Iraqi patients with CKD stages 3–4 and 45 age- and sex-matched health...

Kidney-Based Molecular Diagnostics of Freshwater Drowning: Comparative Evaluation of SP-A2 and AQP5 in an Animal Model

Renal SP-A2 showed moderate diagnostic utility as a supportive biomarker for drowning, whereas AQP5 lacked sufficient discriminatory power for cause-of-death determination, which suggests that it reflects environmental modulation rather than drowning-specific biological responses.
