This study examines how family farm development is associated with farmers’ income using prefecture-level panel data from China spanning 2013 to 2024. We employ a two-way fixed-effects framework with standard errors clustered at the prefecture-level city, and measure regional agricultural technical efficiency using data envelopment analysis under variable returns to scale (DEA–VRS). The results show a significant positive association between family farm development and farmers' income, though the magnitude is modest. Instrumental variable estimates confirm the robustness of this association, with coefficients significantly larger than ordinary least squares results, revealing a pattern of negative selection in which family farms develop more rapidly in areas with weaker agricultural conditions. Mechanism tests indicate that agricultural technical efficiency serves as a partial mediator, while direct channels play the dominant role. Interaction-based heterogeneity analysis shows that the income-enhancing association is significantly stronger in western, non-major-grain-producing, and economically less-developed regions, consistent with diminishing marginal returns to organizational innovation. The findings provide empirical evidence for understanding the regional income effects of family farm development and inform the design of regionally differentiated policies.
Developing agricultural socialized services (ASS) while promoting green and low-carbon grain production is an important component of agricultural modernization in China. Although previous studies have examined the effects of ASS on agricultural productivity, farm income, and individual input use, it remains unclear whe...

This study examines whether and how the digital economy promotes high-quality agricultural development in China. Using provincial panel data for 30 provinces from 2005 to 2020, it constructs a multidimensional index covering development scale, efficiency, benefits and cost, and estimates fixed-effects, geographically w...
As climate variability and production uncertainty increasingly threaten agricultural livelihoods, agricultural insurance has become an important tool for climate risk management and farm income stabilization. However, its distributional effects across farm households remain underexplored. Drawing on Sen’s capabilit...

Within China’s agricultural sector, agricultural new quality productive forces (ANQPFs) constitute an emerging productivity paradigm; however, further empirical testing is still needed to determine whether and through what mechanisms they affect rural economic sustainability. Previous academic studies have mainly exami...

Cluster farming has increasingly been promoted as a collective agricultural approach to improve smallholder productivity, market integration, and rural livelihoods in Ethiopia. Using Collective Action Theory, this study examines the factors influencing farmers’ participation in wheat cluster farming and its impact...
