Abstract
This paper presents a comparative geological, geomorphological, and engineering analysis of three recent rainfall-induced slope failures within the Western Ghats escarpment (Morpho-Zone Aa) of Satara District, Maharashtra, India. The studied locations include the villages of Kurulbaji (Satara Taluka), Mhate Mura (Jawali Taluka), and Sayghar (Jawali Taluka). Utilizing real-time field mapping data, structural configurations, spatial metrics, and hydro-geological observations compiled between 2025 and 2026, we characterize the failure kinematics ranging from shallow fluidic debris flows to deep-seated historical creep and anthropogenic slope instabilities. The underlying lithology across all domains consists uniform Deccan Trap basaltic lava flows capped by un-engineered, highly porous overburden of variable thickness. Our findings indicate that extreme, short-duration monsoonal precipitation acts as the primary dynamic trigger by rapidly elevating internal pore-water pressures, inducing piping action, and reducing effective shear strength along the critical soil-rock interface. The paper categorizes the vulnerabilities into structural engineering typologies, evaluates the down-gradient risk profiles to settlements, public infrastructure, and agricultural lands, and provides actionable mitigation frameworks alongside an escalation protocol for advanced geophysical modeling by the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

The Yizhong River Basin, located in an alpine gorge on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, experiences recurrent landslide-derived debris flows originating from moraine-covered source areas. This study integrates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based geomorphic interpretation, field geological profiling, laboratory direct...

The Kuwari landslide, located in the central Himalaya of Uttarakhand, India, is a complex slope failure that has experienced multiple reactivations since 2013. The instability is controlled by steep terrain, proximity to the Main Central Thrust, intense rainfall, and anthropogenic disturbances. Repeated mass wasting ha...

In tropical volcanic highlands, road construction frequently modifies natural slope geometry and hydrological conditions, thereby increasing landslide susceptibility. This study presents the first systematic inventory and slope-scale geotechnical characterisation of road-cut induced landslides along the Befang–Wum stre...

Fluvial terraces represent important geomorphological archives for reconstructing the effects of climatic fluctuations, tectonic activity, and base-level changes during Quaternary times. This study investigates the geomorphological and stratigraphic evolution of the Bradano, Basento, and Salandrella River systems withi...

On 23 September 2023, a rapid quick-clay landslide occurred at the Stenungsund interchange on the E6 highway in southwestern Sweden, severely damaging national and local infrastructure and closing a key transport corridor for 285 days. The landslide affected approximately 15 ha, with a runout of 620 m and an estimated...
