Abstract

Agricultural intensification is among the major drivers of biodiversity loss, with cascading effects that compromise the supply of essential ecosystem services. To counteract this process, the European Union integrated voluntary agri-environmental measures into the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Since 2015, all CAP direct payments have been tied to the adoption of greening measures (crop diversification, permanent grassland maintenance, ecological focus areas). Using birds as reference taxon, we analyzed whether the implementation of both greening and agri-environmental measures, fostered during the 2015-2022 CAP programming period, enhanced the species richness of overall community, farmland specialists, granivores and insectivores. Applying a cross-sectional approach, we first estimated the overall associations between species richness metrics and sustainable management practices (crop diversification, natural element maintenance, organic, integrated, conservation-tillage farming). Then, employing a longitudinal approach, we evaluated if the implementation of greening practices, promoted by the 2015 CAP reform, increased species richness. All metrics were positively associated with crop diversification. Both overall community richness and insectivorous richness were positively associated with natural elements, while the richness of farmland specialists and granivores showed negative responses. Organic and integrated farming generally promoted species richness, while conservation-tillage farming was negatively associated with insectivorous richness. The longitudinal analysis confirmed that overall community richness benefited from greening interventions promoted by 2015 CAP reform, while farmland specialists, granivorous and insectivorous species richness were not affected in the first years following implementation. We call for evidence-based revisions of CAP agri-environmental measures to improve environmental sustainability of farming without undermining socio-economic sustainability.

Global Afforestation Carbon Sequestration Potential Within an Integrated Environmental Protection and Sustainable Food System Framework

Afforestation is a high-potential and cost-effective climate change mitigation strategy, but its large-scale implementation raises sustainability concerns. It requires extensive areas of land, potentially conflicting with agriculture and impacting food security. Moreover, inappropriate forest expansion, such as the aff...

Understanding the low uptake of agroforestry measures in Italy: evidence from CAP implementation and stakeholder perspectives

Agroforestry systems represent a multifunctional land-use approach capable of enhancing numerous ecosystem services, including biodiversity, soil conservation, and climate resilience, as well as promoting farm income diversification by fostering sustainable quality production. However, despite active policy support sin...

Agri-Environmental Assessment of Land-Cover Dynamics, Ecological Pressure, and Economic–Ecological Decoupling in Konaweha Watershed

Watershed transformation poses a challenge for maintaining agricultural production while sustaining ecological functions, particularly in tropical regions where economic activities are strongly dependent on natural resources. This study aimed to (i) analyze economic dynamics in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries...

Bridging private and public benefits in sustainable weed management: insights from the OPER8 European network

The transition toward herbicide-free weed management is central to the European Green Deal and the Farm-to-Fork Strategy. Despite the availability of mature non-chemical weed management (NCWM) techniques, their uptake across European farming systems remains limited. This study examines this adoption gap by integrat...

From risk to resilience: profitability gains from diversification and community-supported agriculture in small-scale horticulture

Abstract Crop diversification plays a central role in agricultural sustainability transitions, which require not only ecological innovation but also economic viability at the farm level. Despite robust evidence of ecological benefits, the socioeconomic implications of diversification remain insufficiently examined. Thi...

Agricultural practices as natural climate solutions in the Canadian Prairies.

Management practices focused on environmental outcomes in agriculture can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, complementing farm production practices that provide food and a wide variety of other social-ecological services. However, evidence of the efficacy of such practices fo...
