Abstract

Low-pressure superheated steam (LPSS) drying of laboratory-rewetted japonica paddy rice (Suijing 18) was investigated using 25 temperature-pressure runs. Five absolute pressures (0.010–0.030 MPa), five temperatures (50–70 °C), and six sampling times produced 150 observations. Moisture content ranged from 8.92% to 20.81% w.b. The quadratic moisture model gave R 2 = 0.919, while grouped cross-validation gave R 2 = 0.892, RMSE = 0.939 percentage points, and MAE = 0.762 percentage points. Drying time and temperature were the main factors affecting moisture removal, whereas pressure had a smaller effect. From 1,499 valid single-grain force–displacement curves, F 0.50 ranged from 23.75 to 67.31 N. Its model gave R 2 = 0.691, and grouped cross-validation gave R 2 = 0.567, RMSE = 6.51 N, and MAE = 4.99 N. The proportion of grains with an identifiable first fracture increased from 16.7% at moisture ≥19% to 91.8% at moisture <11%. Drying at 60 °C and 0.015 MPa for 20 min produced 14.26 ± 0.22% w.b. and F 0.50 of 46.87 ± 4.11 N. SEM images showed qualitative microstructural differences among LPSS-, hot-air-, and shade-dried samples at similar final moisture contents.

Effect of Temperature‐Controlled Microwave Drying on the Physicochemical and Microbiological Properties of Kefir Powder

In this study, the physicochemical and microbiological properties of kefir powders produced using a drying system modified by microwave temperature‐control (MTCM) and foam‐mat drying (FMD) were evaluated. The color parameters ( L , a , and b ) of the kefir powders ranged between 89.68–91.16, −1.54–(−4.48), an...

Temperature-Dependent Physical and Spray Characteristics of B50 Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel

This study investigated the effects of fuel temperature on the density, viscosity, spray angle, and spray length of B50 waste cooking oil biodiesel. Biodiesel was produced through degumming, esterification, and transesterification and then blended with diesel at a 50:50 volume ratio. Tests were conducted from 30 to 70°...

Engineering Properties of Little Millet and Barnyard Millet based on Moisture Content

At five moisture levels of 8.70, 11.51, 15.76, 18.37, and 20.82% (dry basis), the physical qualities of little millet and barnyard millet were examined. Progressive absorption of moisture led to a steady increase in grain size and associated characteristics. The length, width, and thickness rose from 1.70 to 2.03 mm, 1...

Optimization of mechanical convective drying parameters for fermented uf-18 cacao beans using response surface methodology

Mechanical drying is considered an efficient drying technique; however, continuous mechanical drying may compromise flavor and textural properties. This study aimed to create optimized drying parameters of fermented UF-18 cacao beans using a laboratory scale mechanical dryer and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A ce...

Effects of high-temperature kiln drying on tensile and shrinkage properties and chemical composition of boxed-heart timbers from Japanese larch ( Larix kaempferi )

The high-temperature setting method is a kiln-drying technique that rapidly dries boxed-heart timbers under high-temperature and low-relative-humidity conditions to suppress surface checking. This study examined the effects of this drying method on the properties of Japanese larch ( Larix kaempferi ) boxed-heart ti...

Data-driven optimization of moisture content in thermoset transfer moulding: an industrial case study on process stability and scrap reduction

This study investigates the influence of moisture content in an epoxy-based thermoset moulding compound on process stability and scrap rate during injection moulding, motivated by seasonal performance variations observed in an industrial setting. A controlled trial production series was conducted using six discrete moi...
