Abstract
This study investigated the efficacy of calcium nanoparticles (CaNPs) in mitigating heavy metal (HM) toxicity and enhancing the nutritional quality of Amaranthus hybridus grown in soils from the Osun riverbank (RB) and Ido-Osun dumpsite (DS). Cultivation included control treatments (RB-C, DS-C), foliar application (RB-T1, DS-T1), soil application (RB-T2, DS-T2), and combined soil-foliar application (RB-T3, DS-T3) at 75 mg L-1 CaNPs. DS soil exhibited 4.93-fold higher pollution than RB, with lead (Pb) predominant. CaNP applications significantly enhanced biomass and antioxidant activity while promoting phytostabilisation (translocation factor <1). Notably, shoot Pb concentration decreased from 11.10 to 2.202 mg kg-1 in DS following soil application, and the translocation of Fe, Cu, and Cr was effectively restricted. CaNP treatment also enhanced antioxidant activity and nutritional quality. The human health risk assessments revealed that CaNPs effectively reduced the hazard index (HI) of RB from an unsafe 1.618 to below the safety threshold (HI < 1), rendering them safe for human consumption. Despite a notable HI reduction in DS vegetables, residual Pb levels exceeded safe limits (HI >1), posing persistent non-carcinogenic health risks upon ingestion. Thus, while CaNPs effectively remediate RB soils, hyper-polluted DS environments require further optimization.
Nanobiochar is well documented for heavy metal removal from water, but its efficacy in soil phytostabilization remains less explored. This study compared nanobiochar (NB) and rice husk powder (RH) at 50 and 100 g kg-1 for improving Pb and Cd phytostabilization in mustard (Brassica campestris L.) under pot conditions. C...

Lead (Pb) is one of the most toxic heavy metals adversely affecting agricultural productivity, soil health, and food safety. Organic amendments (OAs), particularly biochar (BC) and compost (C), can mitigate heavy metal toxicity through Pb (II) immobilization, improved soil physicochemical properties, enhanced nutrient...

The conversion of invasive weed biomass into functionalised soil amendments presents a promising strategy for sustainable agricultural management. This study evaluated the effects of pristine Lantana biochar (BC, pyrolysed at 500°C to 600°C) and iron-modified Lantana biochar (FBC) on soil physicochemical properties, nu...

To enhance phytoextraction potential of marigold (Tagetes erecta L. var. Pusa Bahar), an attempt was made to increase the bioavailability of heavy-metals in a polluted-soil through organic amendments and microbial inoculant. The study evaluated the effectiveness of farmyard manure (FYM), green-manure (Sesbania sp.) and...

Remediating calcareous soils co-contaminated with copper and arsenic remains a major challenge due to low metal bioavailability and the risk of chelator-induced phytotoxicity, which can severely limit phytoremediation success. This study investigated a synergistic strategy combining heavy metal-resistant plant growth-p...

The results demonstrated that MNBs treatment significantly stimulated both aboveground growth and biomass accumulation in ryegrass, and principal component and correlation analyses revealed that soil heavy metal retention was positively correlated with total dissolved solids (TDSs), and these parameters inversely affec...
