Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on the growth, heavy metal accumulation, and phytoremediation performance of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mahasarakham) under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stress. Salicylic acid was applied using two methods: grass-cutting soaking (S) and soaking combined with watering (SW). Both SA treatments significantly (p < 0.05) improved root and shoot growth and biomass compared with the control under both Cd-Pb co-contaminated and uncontaminated conditions. SA also enhanced leaf phytochemical composition, particularly under metal stress. Chlorophyll content increased from 0.56 in the control to 0.95 (S) and 1.03 µg mg⁻¹ (SW), while carotenoid increased from 45.7 in the control to 60.4 (S) and 62.1 µg mg⁻¹ (SW). In contrast, proline content decreased from 11.5 in the control to 10.9 (S) and 8.68 (SW), indicating reduced stress. Moreover, SA enhanced metal uptake, increasing Cd accumulation to 454.8 (S) and 279.6 mg plant⁻¹ (SW) and Pb accumulation to 427.8 (S) and 298.7 mg plant⁻¹ (SW), compared with 222.1 and 254.7 mg plant⁻¹ in their respective controls. The increased uptake resulted in greater accumulation in roots, stems, and leaves, with Napier grass exhibiting a higher bioaccumulation potential for Cd (BCF > 1) than for Pb (BCF ≤ 1). Overall, SA improved Napier grass tolerance to Cd and Pb stress by promoting plant growth, enhancing phytochemical composition, and increasing phytostabilization capacity. These findings demonstrate that SA-treated Napier grass is a promising candidate for the phytomanagement of HM-contaminated land while simultaneously serving as a high-biomass energy crop.

Nanobiochar-assisted phytostabilization of lead and cadmium in mustard (Brassica campestris L.) is associated with reduced metal availability and improved physiological performance.

Nanobiochar is well documented for heavy metal removal from water, but its efficacy in soil phytostabilization remains less explored. This study compared nanobiochar (NB) and rice husk powder (RH) at 50 and 100 g kg-1 for improving Pb and Cd phytostabilization in mustard (Brassica campestris L.) under pot conditions. C...

Short-Term Cadmium and Lead Exposure in Common Buckwheat: Metal Accumulation, Physiological Responses, and Compositional Changes

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) contamination may alter common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench cv. ‘Korona’) physiology and composition. The objective was to determine whether common buckwheat maintains physiological performance under controlled Cd and Pb exposure while assessing metal transfer to harvested achenes....

Combined effects of difenoconazole and salinity stress on growth, photosynthetic pigments, and oxidative responses in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Environmental contamination by pesticides and salts is a growing agricultural issue, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Difenoconazole (DIF), a commonly used fungicide, and sodium chloride (NaCl), a widespread salinity stressor, often coexist in soil and water, yet their combined effects on non-target crops such...

Foliar application of salicylic acid and kaolin for enhancing drought tolerance, antioxidant activity and photosynthetic performance in Nagami kumquat (Fortunella margarita)

Nagami kumquat ( Fortunella margarita ) is sensitive to high summer temperatures and limited water, which reduce growth and fruit quality. To enhance drought tolerance, a greenhouse factorial experiment was conducted in Chaboksar, Iran, using kaolin (0, 3, 5%) and salicylic acid (0.0, 0.1, 1.0 mM) under three irr...

Amelioration of lead (Pb) stress in Brassica campestris L. by synergistic application of biochar and compost under Pb-contaminated soil.

Lead (Pb) is one of the most toxic heavy metals adversely affecting agricultural productivity, soil health, and food safety. Organic amendments (OAs), particularly biochar (BC) and compost (C), can mitigate heavy metal toxicity through Pb (II) immobilization, improved soil physicochemical properties, enhanced nutrient...
