TL;DR

Osteoporosis and osteopenia are prevalent among postmenopausal women in Saudi Arabia and older age and longer menopausal duration were associated with lower BMD, whereas higher BMI and longer lactation duration were positively associated with BMD.

Abstract

Although osteoporosis is a major public health concern, limited and outdated research in Saudi Arabia highlights the need to investigate its current prevalence and risk factors among postmenopausal women in Jeddah. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women in Saudi Arabia and identify factors associated with bone mineral density (BMD). A total of 450 healthy postmenopausal women aged ≥50 years were randomly chosen to participate in this cross-sectional study. The study collected demographic information and performed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans of the lumbar spine and femoral neck. The overall prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia was 12.2% and 42.9%, respectively. Women with osteoporosis were older, had been menopausal for longer, and had a lower body mass index (BMI) than those with osteopenia or normal BMD (P < .001). Compared with those in the other 2 groups, women with osteoporosis also had fewer deliveries and a shorter breastfeeding duration (P = .01 and P = .003, respectively). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that age, BMI, and duration of lactation were independent predictors of lumbar spine BMD (P = .007, P = .001, and P = .01, respectively), whereas menopausal duration and BMI were independent predictors of femoral neck BMD (P = .008 and P = .001, respectively). Osteoporosis and osteopenia are prevalent among postmenopausal women in Saudi Arabia. Older age and longer menopausal duration were associated with lower BMD, whereas higher BMI and longer lactation duration were positively associated with BMD. Given the cross-sectional design, these associations should not be interpreted as causal. Early identification and appropriate assessment of postmenopausal women according to their clinical and demographic risk factors may help support osteoporosis prevention.

Prevalence of vertebral osteoporosis in Thai postmenopausal women under 70

Current age-based screening thresholds may underestimate at-risk women in this population of postmenopausal women, suggesting earlier detection and targeted prevention strategies are warranted as Thailand transitions to an aged society.

Osteoporosis screening in diabetic postmenopausal women: a neglected priority

Following a pragmatic and targeted approach by focusing on high-risk subgroups such as postmenopausal women with T2DM may be more practicable, and timely referral for DXA scanning, with careful interpretation of FRAX scores, and adjunctive tools such as trabecular bone score where available, may help reduce fracture-as...

Dietary mineral insufficiency and osteoporosis risk across skeletal sites in older Iranian adults: IMOS-2021.

It is suggested that dietary phosphorus may be independently associated with osteoporosis risk in this population; however, prospective studies incorporating objective dietary assessment, broader lifestyle factors, and fracture-related outcomes are needed to confirm causality and address residual confounding.

Prevalence of osteoporosis and its correlation with clinical variables in postmenopausal Iranian women with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis: A cross-sectional pilot study

This pilot study explored the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) and its correlation with clinical variables in postmenopausal Iranian women with degenerative lumbar spinal canal stenosis (DLSS). This is a cross-sectional pilot study of 40 postmenopausal women (50–65 years) with symptomatic DLSS. D...

Risk Assessment of Osteoporosis Among Adults in a Rural Community of Meghalaya: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk. Rural populations in India remain underexplored despite unique lifestyle and dietary factors affecting bone health.  Objective: To determine the prevalence of moderate to high osteoporosis...

Real-world treatment outcomes in pregnancy and lactation-associated osteoporosis: a nationwide multicenter cohort study

Background Pregnancy and lactation-associated osteoporosis (PLO) is an uncommon cause of fragility fractures in young women, and the optimal treatment strategy remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features, treatment approaches, and bone mineral density (BMD) outcomes of women with PLO across m...
