Abstract

Changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC), especially those associated with the urbanization process, play a fundamental role in intensifying phenomena such as heat islands. These are characterized by the temperature difference between urban areas, affected by anthropogenic activities, and their rural surroundings, which are less impacted. The Metropolitan Region of Vale do Aço (RMVA), located in the interior of Minas Gerais, Brazil, lacks studies addressing the relationships between urban climate and landscape dynamics. The objective of this study was to analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of LULC between 1985 and 2024, project scenarios for 2045 and 2065, and evaluate the relationships between Land Surface Temperature (LST), different land cover classes, and the vegetation (NDVI), built-up area (NDBI), and moisture (NDMI) indices, focusing on the formation and intensity of Surface Urban Heat Islands (SUHI). MapBiomas data and Landsat 5 and 8 satellite images were used to estimate LST and SUHI. The results revealed important landscape transformations throughout the analyzed period: natural vegetation decreased by 26% between 1985 and 2024, while forest plantation areas increased by 850.21%. Urban areas also exhibited substantial growth, reaching 54.75%, with the potential to increase by an additional 52.56% in the projected scenarios between 2024 and 2065. Correlations between LST and spectral indices were stronger during the rainy season, especially in agricultural and pasture areas. The spatial intensity of SUHI was more diffuse during the rainy season and exhibited a smaller spatial extent during the dry season, highlighting the possible influence of precipitation on thermal variation.

Simulating the impact of land use and land cover change on surface air temperature trends in South-Central Vietnam

Vegetation degradation, particularly due to deforestation and urbanization, has substantially increased local surface air temperatures in many regions. This study aims to quantify the impact of land use and land cover change (LUCC) on surface air temperature trends in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam. Monthly...

Wetland Loss, Impervious Surface Expansion, and Urban Thermal Stress: A Spatiotemporal Analysis of Land Use Change and Urban Thermal Patterns in Colombo District, Sri Lanka

Rapid urbanization in tropical Asia has fundamentally transformed land use–land cover while intensifying urban thermal stress, yet the relationship between land cover change and thermal conditions is frequently assumed to be spatially uniform. This study challenges that assumption by demonstrating that land cover–therm...

Urbanization, Land Use Change, and Land Surface Temperature: A Remote Sensing-Based Assessment for Sustainable City Planning and Development

Increasing urbanization has led to changes in land use and land cover (LULC), which have a direct impact on land surface temperature (LST). There is a need to examine the impact of land use change to understand the relation between land use policy, urbanization, and land surface temperature, which will help in meetin...

A decadal analysis of land surface temperature dynamics in response to urban expansion and vegetation loss in Faridpur

Land-atmosphere interactions, urban thermal environments, and the impacts of land-use and land-cover (LULC) alterations are effectively grasped through the precise measurement of land surface temperature (LST). In this work, Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS imagery from 2014 and 2024 was utilized to track ten-year variations in LST...

Spatiotemporal Interactions of Land Use Change, Land Surface Temperature, and Vegetation Dynamics in China's Caohai National Nature Reserve

Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use change (LUC), land surface temperature (LST), and vegetation indices is critical for assessing ecological changes and informing sustainable land management. This study investigates the long‐term interrelationships between LUC, LST, and vegetation indices in Chin...
