Future Forecasts? - Is AI a Workforce Revolution or Disruption?

2026 · Phoenix Scholar · 0 citations · 3 references

Abstract

This narrative literature review synthesizes findings from research studies, publications from 2024 to 2026, and AI-generated prompts to examine forecasts of how artificial intelligence (AI) may affect the workforce. The literature consistently showed that AI is transforming job structures, automating routine tasks, and changing skill requirements. Information-based and cognitive roles appear most vulnerable to automation, while physically intensive and interpersonal jobs are less affected. At the same time, new employment categories are emerging in AI development, digital transformation, human-AI collaboration, and data-driven decision support. The literature also raises concerns about job displacement among low-skill workers, widening inequality, the need for large-scale retraining, regulatory safeguards, and the continued importance of human-driven innovation. Overall, scholars, practitioners, and leaders suggest that AI is more likely to augment, rather than fully replacing human labor. Although AI’s long-term impact on the workforce remains uncertain, its influence is undeniable as organizations adapt to rapidly evolving technological capabilities.
