Physiological and Biomechanical Key Performance Indicators for Frontal Jab in Boxing

Abstract

Boxing is a complex contact sport that requires knowledge of technique and body control for proper execution. Previous works that evaluate strikes from martial arts focus on outcome parameters from the most dominant segments, leaving the rest of the body untended while hindering any learning possibility from the analysis. The objective of this work is to define a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the frontal jab and provide clear motion indications, based on said analysis, to improve. To accomplish this, the statistical significance is analyzed from 11 parameters of movement and muscle activity from seven variations of the jab. The resulting statistically significant KPIs are presented with complementary thresholds to identify the performance of new punches. Motion is recorded with inertial measurement units (IMUs) and electromyography (EMG) to evaluate the kinetics and kinematics as well as the physiological response. In addition, an optical capture system is integrated as a gold standard to validate the results. Finally, it is determined that the muscle activity and body usage parameters allow for identifying the different levels of technique and power in a frontal jab, addressing performance limitations. This system could help provide information for a virtual coach to evaluate performance and offer indications for improvement actions while maintaining portability.

Biomechanical Parameters of Attacking Throws as a Basis for Technical Training in Judo

Objectives. The development of school physical education requires effective means for improving motor skills, coordination, and speed-strength qualities. Judo is one such means, and the effectiveness of teaching its technical actions depends on the objective assessment of movement biomechanics. This study aimed to dete...

Mini Review: Technology-Driven Bridging of Biomechanics and Pedagogy: Translating Forehand EMG Data into Intelligent Coaching Strategies

Tennis forehand is a tricky activity that employs practically all parts of a body. The legs and the trunk are important as well as the arm and the wrist, as they determine the speed with which the racket attains movement, and influence the mastery that the player is going to have over the ball when it strikes and is en...

Kinematics of the Hiking Position in Optimist-Class Sailors Using a 2D Analysis Method

Study purpose. This study aimed to analyze 2D kinematic characteristics (joint angles and posture displacement) and evaluate the effects of the maneuver side (port and starboard) and movement phase transitions (before, during, and after) during hiking maneuvers in elite Optimist class sailing. Materials and methods. A...

Punching performance, physiological responses and lower-limb neuromuscular characteristics in boxing

Introduction: Boxing is a high-intensity intermittent sport in which performance depends on the ability to produce effective punches and sustain their intensity during repeated efforts. Punching performance, physiological responses, and lower-limb neuromuscular characteristics are key factors in understanding boxing-sp...

Designation and Analysis of the Effective Parameters on the Performance of the ESAR Prosthetic Foot

The energy-storing and releasing (ESAR) prosthetic foot permits capturing the elastic energy and then returning it as forward propulsion. Although ESAR has been widely accepted by the majority of amputees, the selection of an alternative prosthetic for a certain user is always related to clinical feedback rather than e...
