Abstract

In complex-surface milling, the cutter attitude changes from one tool-path segment to another, so the frequency response function (FRF) of the tool system near the cutting zone is not constant. This point is important in practice because the same spindle speed may lead to different behaviours as the local posture changes. In this paper, the posture effect is described through an equivalent contact-point approach. Abaqus is used to obtain the displacement response for different overhang lengths and inclination angles, and the resulting stiffness, damping, and equivalent mass are then introduced into a single-degree-of-freedom model to build the corresponding FRFs. On that basis, regenerative chatter theory is employed to calculate the limiting axial depth of cut and the associated stability lobe diagrams. The results indicate that a longer overhang lowers the natural frequency and weakens the dynamic stiffness, whereas a larger inclination angle mainly changes the local response level and shifts the stable spindle-speed region. The proposed procedure offers a practical way to connect posture variation with chatter-free parameter selection in complex-surface milling.

Time Domain Analysis of Machining Stability in Hemp Board Milling

Chatter vibrations in cutting are uncontrolled (self-excited) vibrations in a machine–tool–workpiece system, occurring without the involvement of external forces. They result in accelerated tool wear and reduced surface quality. One way to avoid self-excited vibrations is to optimize cutting parameters based on stabili...

Calculation Method for Time-Varying Contact Force of the Ball Screw with Nonuniform Surface Waviness

The ball screw mechanism (BSM) is extensively employed in mechanical systems to convert rotational motion into linear motion. Most of the existing studies primarily concentrate on developing time-invariant calculation methods for the BSM, leading to an incomplete understanding of its time-varying contact characteristic...

Numerical Modelling of Clamping Condition Effects on Contact Behavior and Structural Stability in Toolholder Systems during External Cylindrical Turning

The mechanical stability of tool-clamping systems is governed by contact conditions at the tool holder–tool post interface, which are directly controlled by bolt-induced preload forces. In external turning operations on universal lathes, manual tightening of clamping bolts may introduce preload asymmetry, resulting in...

Stress-strain analysis of cycloidal gear tooth segment using FEM

In robotics and industrial automation, cycloidal reducers are widely used due to their high transmission ratios, compact design, and low backlash. However, their specific kinematics and multiple simultaneous contacts result in complex stress and deformation states, particularly in the cycloidal gear-tooth region. Most...
