Abstract

This study investigated the effects of alginate-powdered activated carbon-quorum quenching (APQ) beads on microbial communities in MBRs treating real semiconductor wastewater. The addition of APQ beads significantly reduced membrane biofouling and extended membrane lifespan. The APQ-MBR maintained stable treatment performance with approximately 99% COD removal while reducing extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and alleviating membrane biofouling. Taxonomic analysis revealed that QQ had limited influence on overall microbial diversity but affected the abundance of several bacterial genera in both mixed liquor and biofilm, including a reduction in the biofouling-associated genus Ferruginibacter and an enrichment of Bradyrhizobium. Correlation analysis further revealed associations between specific bacterial genera, N-butanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C4-HSL), and EPS components. These results suggest that QQ-mitigated membrane biofouling mitigation is associated with changes in selected microbial populations involved in biofilm formation rather than broad alteration of the overall microbial community.

Incorporating Biocarriers in Membrane Bioreactors for Wastewater Treatment and Membrane Fouling Control From a Microbial Perspective.

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are widely applied for advanced wastewater treatment, but membrane fouling remains a major constraint on long-term operational stability and economic viability. Biocarrier-assisted MBRs (BC-MBRs) have emerged as a promising strategy to simultaneously improve pollutant removal and mitigate fo...

Aspartame induces hormesis-toxicity switch in microalgal‑bacterial granular sludge: Community assembly and functional gene responses.

Based on the distribution of aspartame in anaerobic digestion effluent (ADE) from food waste, this study explored the potential application of microalgae-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) for treating ADE containing aspartame. While previous studies have focused on toxicity, the core scientific question of this work is...

Plastisphere microbial succession and predicted functional responses: a 60-day temporal study in wastewater effluent

Although wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) achieve high microplastic removal efficiency, substantial quantities are still discharged, and the long-term dynamics of plastisphere microorganisms on their surfaces and potential impacts on receiving waters remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a 7-15-30-60-day in...
