Abstract

Knowledge of genetic variability enables plant breeders to identify superior traits and facilitate gene introgression from diverse germplasm into breeding programs. Accordingly, a field experiment was undertaken at the Fladulife testing site in Kurmuk district, northwestern Ethiopia, during the 2020/21 cropping season. This research assessed the extent of variability among sorghum accessions for key qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The experiment comprised seventeen sorghum accessions arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Vegetative stage observations showed that 70% of accessions had white midribs, 66% elliptical heads, 57% small seeds, 86% lacked awns, and 98% exhibited tanned leaf pigmentation. Reproductive traits also varied, with 73% compact ear heads, 62% dark brown glumes, and 50% pearly white seeds, reflecting significant qualitative diversity across the accessions. Phenological assessment revealed that most accessions matured between 90 and 120 days, placing them within the medium-maturing category. Yield performance analysis identified ADM1, ADM2, ADM5, ADM6, ADM8, ADM10, ADM16, and ADM17 as low-yielding, whereas ADM4, ADM7, and ADM14 produced intermediate grain yields. The highest grain yield was obtained from accession ADM4, followed by ADM14, suggesting their superior agronomic potential for breeding. Agronomic and morphological assessments have provided a more precise estimation of genetic diversity, constituting the fundamental resource for breeding programs and variety development. The variability identified in this study should be emphasized when formulating breeding strategies for grain yield improvement. To this end, the collection, conservation, and strategic utilization of available germplasm across the study area are imperative.

Evaluation of Genetic Variability and Multivariate Analysis of Major Agro-morphological traits in Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) Germplasm

For germplasm to be effectively conserved and utilised, the characterisation and evaluation of phenotypic traits are crucial for enabling future breeding efforts. The trial was carried out at Bako Agricultural Research Center, Ethiopia, during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 main cropping seasons. The aim of this study was to...

INDUCED GENETIC VARIABILITY, HERITABILITY AND TRAIT ASSOCIATIONS IN YELLOW-PERICARP SORGHUM [SORGHUM BICOLOR (L.) MOENCH] MUTANTS

Yellow-pericarp sorghum possesses nutritional and industrial value owing to its carotenoid content, low condensed-tannin concentration and high starch recovery. However, such landraces in peninsular India remain largely unimproved with limited genetic diversity available for conventional breeding. The present study exp...

Evaluation of Morphological Traits, Yield Performance and Genetic Variability of Soybean (Glycine max L.) Genotypes in the Madhupur Tract of Bangladesh

Soybean improvement depends on the identification of genetically diverse germplasm with superior agronomic performance. This study evaluated the phenotypic diversity, yield potential, and genetic variability of a large and diverse panel of 278 soybean genotypes under the agro-ecological conditions of the Madhupur Tract...

EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT SETS OF POST RAINY SORGHUM [SORGHUM BICOLOR L. MOENCH] CROSSES FOR YIELD AND RELATED TRAITS UNDER RAINFED SITUATION

Post-rainy season sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) requires broadening of its genetic base to improve productivity while retaining adaptation to moisture-limited production environments. Conventional biparental breeding can restrict recombination among diverse favourable alleles, whereas multi-parent crossing prov...

Morphological and Yield Trait Variability in Eight Cultivars of Gboma Eggplant (Solanum macrocarpon L.) in Burkina Faso

Gboma eggplant (Solanum macrocarpon L.) is an important leafy and fruit vegetable in Africa, but information on cultivar-level morphological and yield variation under Burkina Faso conditions remains limited. This study assessed eight cultivars in the North-Sudanian zone of Burkina Faso between July and October 2024. A...

Phenological Diversity and Yield-Component Variation among Early-Maturing Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) Accessions in the Southern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) is an important grain legume in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the value of improved germplasm depends on the fit between crop duration, reproductive architecture and the target production environment. This study evaluated 20 early-maturing cowpea accessions at the National Cereals R...
