Abstract

Islamic entrepreneurship education at the university level has a fundamental challenge. The literature on this subject focuses on the incorporation of Islamic values into the business realm, but does not convert those values into 21st century teaching methods that focus on critical thinking, digital literacy, and solving complex problems. The majority of the curricula get stuck in the halal-haram dichotomy of Fiqh Muamalah, and do not incorporate the transformative and sustainability dimensions that the current global goals and agendas require. This conceptual article seeks to overcome this challenge by developing a new pedagogical framework that integrates the Maqashid Syariah of hifz al-mal (protection of wealth), hifz al-nasl (protection of progeny), and hifz al-bi’ah (protection of the environment) with the 4Cs of the 21st century skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Through theory synthesis, this article constructs a spiral curriculum model of Islamic marketing ethics and Islamic entrepreneurship integrated with digital technologies. This article has a threefold contribution. First, a conceptual bridge between Fiqh Muamalah and 21st century teaching methods. Second, an operational spiral curriculum model of Islamic entrepreneurship. And third, a research proposition to test and enhanced the framework.
