Abstract
The field of VR studies and the industries that promote it are strongly shaped by the notion of immediacy, or the absence of mediation, an idea that holds considerable appeal in contemporary societies. User’s immersive response to the technological properties of the system is often described as instantaneous, something that “kicks in” almost suddenly once the 3D headset is worn. Rooted in phenomenological anthropology, my research among Social Virtual Reality (SVR) users in VRChat suggests a more complex process. SVR experiences develop gradually via prolonged exposure and bodily attunement, shifting from initial novelty toward practices of optimization. Their stories portray immersive experiences as materially, imaginatively and socially constructed over time, with knowledge about it circulating through interactions and media, and narratives articulated retrospectively.
As mental health challenges continue to rise, there is increasing interest in interventions that promote psychological change through emotionally and experientially rich states. One well-studied example involves mystical-type experiences, typically reported in psychedelic-assisted interventions. Virtual reality (VR),...

Immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the metaverse are transforming contemporary consumer experiences. While prior research has largely emphasized their ability to enhance engagement, enjoyment, and decision-making, less is known about how these technologies shape consumer we...

Despite the growing use of virtual reality (VR) in education, theoretical accounts remain limited in explaining how a technologically mediated activity becomes part of a broader learning process. Existing frameworks provide valuable insights into cognitive and affective processes associated with VR use, but offer less...
Social VR—immersive virtual environments where people interact in Virtual Reality—is entering an uncertain period. The metaverse has lost much of its force as an industry narrative that positioned Social VR as the future of work, learning, and online social life. Major platforms have struggled to sustain adoption, and...

The shift toward digitalisation accelerated the usage of online exhibitions; however, flat-screen platforms are still constrained in terms of spatial experience, interactivity, and social presence, all of which are required in industrial design education. This study addresses the lack of experiential quality in convent...
