Abstract
Embankments constructed on very soft soils such as peat are frequently controlled by means of an observational method approach. Concurrent observations of maximum settlement and maximum lateral movement of the soil profile at the embankment toe can be used to calculate a deformation ratio which varies with load application and can be interpreted as an indicator of stability. Trigger or threshold values have been suggested for single stage embankments constructed on soft mineral soils, but little guidance is available for multi-stage embankments on organic, peat soils. This research is a compilation of analysis of several published international case histories involving instrumented embankments and load tests constructed on peat soils. Suggested limits for threshold values are developed for deformation ratios and shear strain rate. Recommendations for instrumentation layout, monitoring frequencies, data interpretation are developed. The goal of the paper is to summarise published experience and provide guidance to practitioners using the observational method to control stability of embankments on very soft peat soils.
This paper presents a series of geotechnical centrifuge experiments on embankments founded on soft clay, focusing on load transfer, pore pressure response, and deformation mechanisms. Eight heavily instrumented tests were conducted with systematic variation in clay stiffness, embankment geometry, and loading conditions...

Soft soils can be improved with granular columns to increase load-bearing capacity and reduce embankment settlements. However, conventional columns often undergo excessive lateral deformation near the top due to the low confinement provided by very soft soils. Geosynthetic encasement overcomes this limitation by offeri...

The structural integrity of highway embankments, engineered cut slopes, and natural hillsides is an essential concern for geotechnical professionals and civil engineers worldwide. Failures along transport corridors frequently lead to catastrophic ground movements, extensive infrastructure damage, economic paralysis, an...

Soils with low bearing capacity and/or high compressibility are widely encountered in both onshore environments — such as urban, industrial, and transportation infrastructure areas — and offshore settings in Brazil and worldwide. This widespread occurrence requires geotechnical interventions aimed at stabilizing and im...

This study assesses and compares the performance of single-helix and double-helix anchors in reinforcing geofoam embankments against uplift loads in sapric peat. Uplift instability is an important geotechnical concern for lightweight embankments constructed in peatland areas, particularly under groundwater fluctuations...
