Bio-efficacy of Chromolaena odorata on the Agromorphological Parameters and Yield of Two Varieties of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) in Taabo, Southern Côte d’Ivoire

Abstract

Chemical fertilisers can support crop production but may create environmental and accessibility concerns, prompting interest in locally available organic inputs. This study evaluated the effects of powdered material and aqueous extracts of Chromolaena odorata on the agromorphological performance and yield of Clemson spineless and Hiré okra varieties in Taabo, southern Côte d’Ivoire. The experiment comprised three completely randomised blocks with three replicates and fourteen treatments. Powdered material was applied at 5, 15, and 25 g, while aqueous extracts were applied at 5, 15, and 25 g/L. Treatments were applied four times at two-week intervals before, at, and after sowing. Germination, survival, leaf area, plant height, collar diameter, number of leaves, number of fruits per plant, and fruit weight were assessed. Germination ranged from 83.33% to 100%, while survival ranged from 97.50% to 100%. Extract application generally improved growth and yield relative to the controls. The 25 g/L aqueous treatment produced the highest leaf area in Clemson spineless (225.94 cm²) and the highest collar diameter (0.87 cm), mean fruit number (6.29), and mean fruit weight (28.58 g) in Hiré. Across extract forms, the aqueous treatments generally produced stronger responses than the powdered material, except for the number of leaves, for which the two forms were statistically similar. Under the conditions of the study, Chromolaena odorata aqueous extract, particularly at 25 g/L, showed potential as a locally available organic input for okra production.

Effects of foliar biostimulant formulation and dose on fruit development and quality of sweet granadilla (Passiflora ligularis Juss.)

Plant biostimulants represent a promising alternative for improving production efficiency and fruit quality; however, limited information is available regarding their application to sweet granadilla (Passiflora ligularis Juss.). This study evaluated the effects of formulation and dose of two foliar biostimulants on sweet granadilla fruit development and quality under Andean conditions. Crop+Plus and Kelan Complex were applied at 0.0, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mL·L⁻¹ in a randomised complete block design with split plots. Ten fruits were selected from each experimental unit, and their polar and equatorial diameters were measured at 0, 24, and 50 days after the first application. Total soluble solids, individual fruit weight, and weight-based estimated yield were determined at harvest. Greater polar and equatorial diameters were observed when Crop+Plus was applied, with significant effects of time and their interaction. At 50 days, Crop+Plus at 2.0 mL·L⁻¹ produced the largest polar and equatorial diameters, reaching 7.70 and 7.43 cm, respectively. Total soluble solids were affected by formulation and dose, whereas fruit weight was mainly influenced by dose. The most favourable results were obtained with Crop+Plus at 2.0 mL·L⁻¹, which produced 20.90 °Brix, a mean fruit weight of 120.0 g, and an estimated yield of 6,720 kg·ha⁻¹. In conclusion, Crop+Plus exerted the most consistent effects on fruit growth and quality, and 2.0 mL·L⁻¹ was the most promising concentration within the range evaluated.

EFFECT OF BIODEPOSIT ELIXIR ORGANIC FERTILIZER ON THE AGRONOMIC AND ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF TWO TOMATO VARIETIES (SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L.) GROWN UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production requires sustainable fertilization practices to improve productivity while reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers. This study evaluated the effects of different BioDeposit Elixir organic fertilizer application rates on the agronomic and economic performance of two tomato varieties under field conditions in Côte d’Ivoire. A field experiment was conducted during the 2024-2025 cropping season using a randomized complete block design with a factorial arrangement of two varieties (Petomech+ and Cobra 26 F1) and five application rates (0, 12, 15, 20, and 25 mL per 10 m²), with three replications. Morphological, phenological, yield, fruit quality, postharvest, and economic traits were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance followed by the Newman–Keuls multiple range test at P < 0.05. BioDeposit Elixir significantly affected most traits. Significant variety × BioDeposit Elixir dose interactions were observed for stem collar diameter, plant height, flowering time, fruit diameter, fruit fresh weight, gross yield, and shelf life. The 25 mL rate generally produced the highest values. Cobra 26 F1 showed superior performance for several traits, including plant height, fruit diameter, gross yield, and shelf life. The number of leaves, number of flowers, fruit appearance, harvest timing, and blossom-end rot incidence were mainly affected by the variety and/or BioDeposit Elixir dose without significant interaction. The 25 mL rate also resulted in the highest net economic value under both selling price scenarios (700 and 900 XOF kg⁻¹). Overall, BioDeposit Elixir improved several agronomic, postharvest, and economic traits, with responses depending on the trait and variety. The 25 mL rate provided the best overall performance under the experimental conditions.

Allelopathic and phytotoxic effects of hexanic extract of leaves and flowers of Sinapis arvensis on Triticum aestivum: chemical composition and bioactivity

The need to develop agricultural practices has intensified the search for natural alternatives to synthetic agrochemicals, with the aim of reducing the risks of these synthetic chemical compounds. This study compared the allelopathic and phytotoxic effects of Sinapis arvensis hexanic extract of leaves and flowers on the germination and early growth of Triticum aestivum . These biological activities were evaluated in relation to the chemical profiles, α-amylase inhibitory activities, as well as the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the extracts. The phytochemical profiles of the two extracts were established by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and tested for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzymatic inhibitory properties. The experiment followed a completely randomized design with three independent replicates per treatment. For each extract type (leaf or flower) and concentration (0, 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL), three replicate Petri dishes containing 100 seeds each were used for every treatment combination. Control seeds received distilled water with 5% Tween-20 as a vehicle control. leaf hexane extract was composed mainly of trans-geranylgeraniol, isocitronellol, and fatty acid methyl esters, while flower hexane extract contained abundant sesquiterpenes such as cubenol, cedrol, and caryophyllene. Both hexanic extract of leaves and flowers exerted concentration-dependent inhibitory effects on seed germination, radicle and hypocotyl elongation, and seedling biomass, with the leaf hexane extract being remarkably more potent. The highest concentration (5 mg/ml) of leaf and flower extracts significantly reduced seed germination as well as radicle and hypocotyl growth (length and weight) compared to the control group. Notably, the extracts significantly decreased α-amylase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, both extracts showed moderate antioxidant activity with the flowers being more effective in radicals’ scavenging and exhibited antimicrobial effects mainly against Gram-positive bacteria. Overall, these findings demonstrate that S. arvensis is a rich source of bioactive secondary metabolites with potent allelopathic potential. The observed phytotoxic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects provide a mechanistic basis for understanding this allelopathic activity and its potential role in plant–plant interference.

Assessing the Effect of NPK Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Nsukka Landrace Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench)

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) is an important fruit vegetable in tropical Africa, but its productivity may be constrained by inadequate soil fertility and inappropriate fertiliser rates. This study evaluated the effects of four NPK 15:15:15 rates on the growth and yield of the Nsukka landrace. A field experiment was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm, Department of Crop Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, using a randomised complete block design with four replications. Treatments comprised 0, 150, 300, and 450 kg ha⁻¹ NPK 15:15:15. Data were collected at two-week intervals on plant height, number of leaves, stem girth, flowering, fruiting, fruit dimensions, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and total fruit yield. The 450 kg ha⁻¹ rate produced the greatest plant height and stem girth at most assessment periods, whereas 300 kg ha⁻¹ produced the highest number of leaves at 6 weeks after planting. The 300 kg ha⁻¹ treatment also resulted in the shortest time to flowering and fruiting and produced the highest fruit length, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and total fruit yield. Total yield reached 6.55 t ha⁻¹ at 300 kg ha⁻¹, compared with 5.29 t ha⁻¹ at 450 kg ha⁻¹ and 2.30 t ha⁻¹ in the control. Under the conditions of this study, 300 kg ha⁻¹ NPK 15:15:15 provided the most favourable overall yield response for Nsukka landrace okra.

Economic and Agronomic Evaluation of Okra (Abelmoschus Esculentus L.) Under Different Sowing Dates and Varieties in Chitwan, Nepal

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is an important vegetable crop in Nepal; however, its productivity and profitability are considerably affected by inappropriate sowing time and insect pest infestation, particularly okra jassid (Amrasca biguttula biguttula Ishida). The present study was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal, from April to August 2021 to evaluate the agronomic and economic performance of different sowing dates and okra varieties. The experiment was arranged in a two-factor factorial randomized complete block design with three replications, consisting of three sowing dates (April 13, April 25, and May 8) and three varieties (Arka Anamika, NOH-05, and Venus). The results revealed that sowing date significantly influenced the growth, yield, and profitability of okra. The May 8 sowing produced the highest plant height (42.63 cm), fruit yield (11.82 mt ha⁻¹), gross return (NRs. 1,182,000 ha⁻¹), net return (NRs. 732,250 ha⁻¹), and benefit–cost ratio (2.63). Among the tested varieties, NOH-05 recorded the highest fruit yield (11.18 mt ha⁻¹) and benefit–cost ratio (2.25). Regression analysis showed a significant negative relationship between leaf damage score and fruit yield (R2=0.5885, p<0.05), suggesting that increased jassid damage substantially reduced crop productivity. The findings indicate that delayed sowing during early May, together with cultivation of the NOH-05 variety, can improve yield, reduce pest-related damage, and enhance profitability under the subtropical conditions of Nepal. The study highlights the importance of optimizing sowing time and varietal selection as a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach for improving okra production. .

Effects of Plant Growth Regulators and Boron on Morpho-phenological Traits and Fruit Yield of Sponge Gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.)

Sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) is an important cucurbitaceous vegetable crop valued for its tender fruits and diverse uses. A field experiment was conducted at the Research Farm, Department of Vegetable Science, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, during the rainy season of 2022 to evaluate the effects of plant growth regulators and micronutrients on growth, flowering, and yield of sponge gourd cv. Pusa Chikni. The experiment comprised 15 treatments involving foliar applications of NAA at 50 and 100 ppm, ethrel at 100 and 150 ppm, borax at 0.05 and 0.10%, their selected combinations and a control. The treatments were applied at the 2- and 4-leaf stages and were arranged in a randomised block design with three replications. The data were subjected to ANOVA and treatment means were compared using the critical difference at the 5% level of significance. Growth and phenological traits, including the number of primary branches per vine, vine length, internodal distance, flowering behaviour, the number of nodes to the first male and female flowers, days to first fruit harvest, and fruit yield, were recorded. The application of ethrel at 150 ppm + borax at 0.05% produced 11.0 primary branches per vine, reduced internodal distance to 10.1 cm, advanced female flowering to 50.3 days, and resulted in the earliest fruit harvest at 60.7 days. This treatment also recorded the highest fruit yield of 140.3 q/ha, compared with 104.2 q/ha in the control. The results indicate that foliar application of ethrel with borax can improve flowering behaviour and yield performance of sponge gourd under the experimental conditions. However, the study was limited to a single season and location.
