Abstract

This monograph traces how artificial intelligence and AGI are reconstituting human sensation and perception through six guiding questions. Its central thesis is that sensation is no longer a biological phenomenon confined within the body but a relational network continuously rewoven together with machines, and that this redesign is continuous, ubiquitous, and irreversible. Drawing on bidirectional co-adaptive brain-computer interfaces, non-verbal latent-space cognition, Peircean semiotics of machine-generated meaning, algorithmic synesthesia and spatial intelligence, cross-modal sensory archaeology, and the everyday editing of perception in smart environments, the book argues that the human is not a subject receding before machinic observation but an intellectual mediator who weaves fragmented machine-produced sensations into coherent meaning. This capacity is defined as sensory literacy in the AGI era.

Re-embodiments and Mind-Extensions

Currently, humanity is experiencing an explosive growth in technological objects designed to improve the body and mind. The main objective of this article is to review two recent classificatory and explanatory systems to cognitive enhancement cybernetic technologies, including both wearable and implantable artifacts that reorganize human embodiment or extend the mind. I argue that an outdated model of the cognitive sciences serves as the basis for these revised systems and taxonomies. Taking an embodied approach to the cognitive sciences, I propose an alternative focus to classify cognitive enhancement cybernetic technologies. Specifically, by adopting a non-orthodox enactive approach to embodied cognition, I propose a new classificatory system that redefines the notion of the cybernetically enhanced human, restricting it to a purely cognitive context. Finally, I evaluate some philosophical implications of my system.

SOMA: In Search of Somatic Intelligence

SOMA is a multisensory robotic sculpture that engages bodily memory as a mode of human–AI communication. Visitors re-enact a remembered movement through a wearable sensing device, while the machine listens, interprets, and responds through its own mechanical choreography, forming an intimate, non-verbal dialogue between human and robotic body. At a time when human–AI interaction is dominated by text-based conversational agents, the work reclaims the body as a site of communication with artificial being, positioning somatic memory as both metaphor and method.

Construction of Machine Self-Awareness in Embodied Intelligence

Machine self-awareness remains a central but un-resolved challenge in embodied intelligence. Existing artificial intelligence systems are largely built on an outside-in paradigm, in which external sensory data are processed into task-oriented outputs. Although such systems can support perception, prediction, and control, they lack an internally grounded mechanism for distinguishing self-generated change from environmental disturbance. This paper proposes an inside-out developmental framework for constructing machine self-awareness. Drawing on embodied cognition, the C0–C2 hierarchy of consciousness, the efference copy mechanism, and the Free Energy Principle, the framework argues that self-awareness should emerge through repeated cycles of motor intention, predictive modeling, sensory feedback, and prediction-error correction. At the core of this process is the formation of a stable self/environment boundary, defined not by anatomical limits but by the coherence of predictive control. The paper develops an eight-stage model that begins with un-conscious information processing, progresses through efference-copy-based sensorimotor calibration and boundary formation, and extends toward global integration, spatial cognition, active perception, and metacognitive self-monitoring. To illustrate this developmental logic, the paper introduces The Chrysalis of Self, a 2D interactive prototype that simulates mirror-test recognition and spatial memory exploration. The prototype is presented as a pedagogical demonstration rather than an empirical validation. The paper further discusses architectural implications, including the limitations of digital twins, the possibility of tool-based extended selfhood, and the need for multi-criteria evaluation combining structural, boundary, and metacognitive evidence. Overall, this work argues that machine self-awareness cannot be externally assigned; it must be progressively constructed through embodied action, prediction, and feedback.
