Green Supply Chain Management and Firm Performance in Pakistan's Textile Industry

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the impact of four green supply chain management (GSCM) practices—eco-design, green procurement, green manufacturing, and green distribution—on firm performance, while examining the mediating role of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) among manufacturing firms in Pakistan's textile industry. Approach: Grounded in a positivist research philosophy, the study adopts a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected through a structured, five-point Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 150 managers, supervisors, and supply chain professionals working in textile manufacturing firms located in Faisalabad, Sheikhupura, and Multan, using a convenience sampling technique. Data were analysed using SPSS for descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and Pearson correlation, and AMOS for confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modelling (SEM), and bootstrapped mediation testing. Findings: The measurement model demonstrated sound reliability (overall Cronbach's α = .913) and adequate sampling adequacy (KMO = .843, Bartlett's test significant, p < .001). Eco-design (β = .410), green procurement (β = .194), green manufacturing (β = .191), and green distribution (β = .165) each exerted a significant positive effect on firm performance, and SSCM itself was a strong positive predictor of firm performance (β = .678). However, SSCM significantly mediated only the relationship between eco-design and firm performance (β = .329, p < .001); its mediating role in the relationships involving green procurement, green manufacturing, and green distribution was not statistically supported. Contributions: The study extends the Resource-Based View by demonstrating that GSCM practices function as valuable, rare, and difficult-to-imitate resources that translate into performance gains, partly through sustainable supply chain capabilities. Textile manufacturers should prioritize eco-design initiatives and strengthen the sustainable supply chain infrastructure required to convert broader green practices into measurable performance outcomes. Originality value: This is among the first studies to empirically test SSCM as a mediating mechanism between multiple GSCM dimensions and firm performance within Pakistan's textile sector, an emerging-economy context where such evidence remains scarce. Supply Chain Management Practices, Innovation and Sustainability Performance Among Manufacturing Firms in North Rift Region

This study examined the moderating role of innovation in the relationship between supply chain management practices and sustainability performance among manufacturing firms in the North Rift Region of Kenya. The study focused on lean, resilient and green supply chain management practices. An explanatory cross-sectional research design was adopted. The target population comprised 500 senior, middle and lower-level managers from manufacturing firms operating in the region. A sample of 222 respondents was selected through stratified random sampling, and 207 completed questionnaires were returned, representing a response rate of 93.2%. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, correlation analysis, multiple regression and hierarchical moderation analysis. The findings showed that firm sustainability performance had a mean score of 3.9855, while lean, resilient and green supply chain management practices and innovation had mean scores of 4.0491, 3.7005, 3.8068 and 3.4839, respectively. Reliability coefficients ranged from 0.751 to 0.898, indicating acceptable internal consistency. Regression results showed that lean, resilient and green supply chain management practices had positive and significant effects on sustainability performance. Innovation also had a positive and significant direct effect and strengthened each practice-performance relationship. The final model explained 90.8% of the variance in sustainability performance. The study concludes that manufacturing firms may achieve stronger sustainability outcomes when supply chain practices are supported by innovation capabilities.

The Influence of Green Supply Chain Management Practices on Sustainability Performance in the Sultanate of Oman Industries: The Mediating Role of Environmental Collaboration

Green supply chain management (GSCM) has become a strategic requirement for industrial firms seeking to reduce environmental harm while improving long-term sustainability performance. Despite growing interest in green procurement, eco-design, green manufacturing, and green distribution, limited empirical evidence explains how these practices are converted into sustainability performance through collaborative environmental action in the Sultanate of Oman. Guided by the Natural Resource-Based View, this study examines the effects of four GSCM practices on environmental collaboration and investigates the mediating role of environmental collaboration in the relationship between GSCM practices and sustainability performance. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain professionals working in Omani industries. From 520 questionnaires distributed, 342 valid responses were retained for analysis. The data were analyzed using Smart PLS 4.0 and partial least squares structural equation modelling. The measurement model demonstrated acceptable reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. The structural results show that eco-design, green procurement, green manufacturing, and green distribution have significant positive effects on environmental collaboration. Environmental collaboration, in turn, has a strong positive effect on sustainability performance. The indirect effects also support the mediation of the relationships between the GSCM practices and the sustainability performance, confirming the mediation chain. The results indicated that green practices are not enough; they have to be integrated with the collaboration of suppliers, customers, logistics and other functions within the company to make green practices produce results in terms of performance. The study adds to GSCM and sustainability literature by providing a relational mechanism that determines the contribution of green practices to the industrial sustainability of the Oman context.

From Silos to Synergy: How supply chain integration drives organizational performance in Nigeria's renewable energy sector

Purpose: Nigeria's renewable energy sector is expanding rapidly, yet fragmented supply chains continue to constrain the operational and service-delivery performance of firms within it. This study examines the effect of four dimensions of supply chain integration (SCI); internal, supplier, customer, and strategic; on the organisational performance of renewable energy firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative, positivist, cross-sectional design was adopted. Structured questionnaires were administered to 100 employees and managers drawn from two renewable energy organisations operating four branches across Lagos State. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression in SPSS 23, informed by a resource-based view (RBV) and contingency-theory framework. Findings: All four hypotheses were supported. Internal integration explained the largest share of variance in organisational performance (R² = .816), followed by overall/strategic integration (R² = .733), supplier integration (R² = .662), and customer integration (R² ≈ .663). Real-time data sharing, open supplier communication, and cross-departmental alignment were the most strongly endorsed integration practices (mean ratings above 4.0 on a 5-point scale). Originality/value: While SCI–performance relationships are well documented in manufacturing, banking, and general service contexts, empirical evidence from Nigeria's renewable energy sector remains scarce. This paper extends SCI theory into an emerging-market energy context shaped by infrastructural and regulatory constraints, and offers practical guidance for managers and policymakers seeking to strengthen integration practices.

The Impact of Green Supply Chain Management on Organizational Sustainability in the Libyan Manufacturing Sector: The Mediating Role of Technological Innovation and Environmental Performance

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of green supply chain management on organizational sustainability, where technology innovation and environmental performance are taken as mediating factors. The focus of this study was on the increasing need for better protection of the environment and the increasing demands of the sustainable development of industries, especially in developing countries, where there are limited empirical data available on sustainability activities. The collected sample comprised 387 managers and technologists from Libyan manufacturing companies using a survey instrument and a stratified random sampling technique. Validity scales were used, and the measurements were done using the five-point Likert scale. The data analysis involved the use of PLS-SEM, where SmartPLS 4.0 was used. It entailed the analysis of the measurement model as well as the structural model, with the bootstrapping being done for 5000 samples. The findings show that GSCM significantly affects the OS. Specifically, it has a positive impact on environmental performance (EP) and technological innovation (TI), which, in turn, enhance the OS. Among the mediating factors, the EP was found to be the strongest predictor and mediator of the OS, followed by TI. The developed model proved to have a high explanatory power, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.660. Thus, the integration of GSCM with innovation and environmental activities can lead to the successful achievement of sustainability objectives among manufacturing enterprises. The study’s limitations are associated with its cross-sectional design and its focus on managers. Future research could employ longitudinal designs and examine other contexts, such as digital transformation, the institutional environment, and the organizational culture.

Creating Social Value through Green Innovation Product: The Mediating Role of Green Supply Chain in the Food and Beverage Industry

Background: Food and beverage businesses face increasing pressure to reduce environmental impacts while creating value for employees, customers, suppliers and communities. This study examined the relationships among green product innovation, green supply chain management and social performance. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 100 owners and managers of food and beverage businesses that reported implementing environmentally responsible operating practices. Respondents were selected purposively and completed an online questionnaire measuring green product innovation, green supply chain management and social performance. The proposed model was analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling with SmartPLS 4. Measurement quality was assessed through indicator loadings, average variance extracted, discriminant validity, Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability, while structural relationships were evaluated through bootstrapping. Results: All indicator loadings exceeded 0.70, average variance extracted values ranged from 0.595 to 0.739, Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from 0.829 to 0.882, and composite reliability values ranged from 0.880 to 0.919. Green product innovation was positively associated with green supply chain management (β = 0.792, p < 0.001) and social performance (β = 0.401, p = 0.001). Green supply chain management was also positively associated with social performance (β = 0.448, p < 0.001). The model explained 62.8% of the variance in green supply chain management and 64.6% of the variance in social performance. Conclusion: Green product innovation and environmentally responsible supply-chain practices were positively associated with reported social performance among the surveyed businesses.

Synergistic effects of lean-green practices on sustainable supply chain performance with a multi-factor moderation analysis

This study contributes by examining the impact of lean and green practices on sustainable supply chain performance, focusing specifically on songket artisan small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bali, Indonesia. The study examines the moderating effects of top management engagement, organisational change management, collaborative synergy, and policy initiatives. The population under investigation comprised 2,194 songket artisan groups, as recorded by the Bali Provincial Trade and Industry Office. Using the Slovin formula, a sample of 584 artisan groups was selected from nine regencies and one municipality in Bali Province. Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling was employed to ensure proportional representation in the selection process. Data collection was conducted using a 1–5 Likert-scale questionnaire, and data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS). The findings imply that the lean practices positively influence green practices, thereby enhancing the sustainable supply chain performance. Green practices act as a mediator in the relationship between lean practices and sustainability outcomes. Furthermore, organisational change management and collaborative synergy strengthen these positive effects, whereas top management engagement and policy initiatives do not play a significant moderating role. These results highlight the need to integrate lean and green strategies, supported by effective organisational and collaborative mechanisms, to improve supply chain sustainability in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), offering valuable insights for both theoretical and practical applications in sustainable operations management.
