Abstract
Canola (Brassica napus L.) is one of the key oilseed crops worldwide, serving as a vital source of edible oil, livestock feed, and biofuel. In Afghanistan, canola production faces significant challenges due to declining soil fertility and over-reliance on expensive chemical fertilizers. Poultry manure, as a low cost and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer, offers a sustainable alternative for improving crop productivity. However, limited scientific information is available regarding the optimal poultry manure application rate for canola under Kabul’s agro-climatic conditions. Therefore, an experimental research was conducted at Kabul University Agricultural Research Farm during the 2025 cropping season using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and four treatments. The study aimed to evaluate Effects of Different Levels of Poultry manure on Growth, Yield, and Yield Components of Canola. The findings of the study revealed that the application of poultry manure significantly influenced on growth, yield and yield components of canola. Overall, the application of 8-ton poultry manure ha-1 had better performance than control. The maximum plant height (117.45 cm), number of branches plant-1 (5.65), number of leaves plant-1 (39.77), number of siliques plant-1 (184.61), silique length (6.01 cm), number of seeds silique-1 (18.39), thousand seed weight (3.40 g), seed yield (2.74 t ha⁻¹), biological yield (9.87 t ha⁻¹), and harvest index (27.76%) were all recorded in T4. The lowest values for all parameters were observed in the control treatment (T1). It is recommended that use 8 tons of poultry manure ha-1 in order to realize optimal seed yield and biological yield of the crop.
Although nutrient management plays a crucial role in determining the productivity of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), comparative information on the effectiveness of organic and inorganic nutrient sources under local conditions is still scarce. A field experiment was conducted during the 2024, Rabi season at Khairahani, Chitwan, to evaluate the effects of different nutrient sources on growth, yield, and profitability of barley var. Mustangey Jau. Using a randomized complete block design with five treatments-controls, chemical fertilizer NPK, poultry manure, farmyard manure, and vermicompost-each replicated four times, significant differences were observed in plant height, leaf area index, effective tillers, and grain yield. NPK fertilizer produced the highest plant height (94.80 cm), leaf area index (0.18), effective tillers (6.52), and grain yield (1.69 t/ha), followed by poultry manure and vermicompost. Organic sources improved growth over the control but yielded less than NPK. Economic analysis showed NPK achieved the highest net return and benefit-cost ratio (2.19), followed by poultry manure (1.34). Therefore, the application of recommended NPK fertilizer is suggested for maximizing barley yield and profitability, while poultry manure can be considered as a suitable organic alternative for improving productivity compared with other organic sources.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris-L.) is one of the most popular pulse crops, providing substantial economic benefits in the farming communities of Afghanistan, and it is for both food security and income generation. it is an important source of calories, proteins, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins for millions of people in both developing and developed countries worldwide. Organic fertilizers play an important role in the growth, yield, and yield attributes of beans. To study this, an experiment was conducted at the Agriculture Faculty of Kabul University during, (2025) growing season, examining the effects of three different levels of chicken manure (control, 10 t/ha-1, 15 t/ha-1, and 20 t/ha-1) on the yield and yield components of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris -L.) under Kabul’s Agro-climatic conditions. Different crop agronomic traits, including to the growth and yield parameters such as plant height, number of branches per plant, number of leaves per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, biological weight t/ha-1 100-seeds weight, and grain yield t/ ha-1. The experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), and the data were analyzed with Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR 2.0.1) software. The results of research indicated that different levels of chicken manure had significant effects on all studied traits (plant height, number of branches/plant, leaves number/plants, number of pods/ plants, number of seeds /pods, one hundred seed weight and seed yield t/ha-1), According to statistical analysis, 20 t/ha-1 chicken manure improved growth and yield characters of common bean. For increased productivity of common beans in Kabul climate, the farmers are recommended to apply a proper dose of chicken manure.

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a fast-growing, nutrient-demanding fruit crop with continuous vegetative and reproductive development. The present study evaluated the effects of organic manures and bio-inoculants, applied with different levels of inorganic fertilisers, on the growth, flowering, yield attributes, and fruit yield of papaya cv. CO 7 under the humid tropical conditions of Kerala. The field experiment was conducted in a randomised block design comprising 12 treatments, three replications, and four plants per treatment. Treatments included combinations of the recommended dose of fertilisers (RDF; 240:240:480 g NPK plant⁻¹ year⁻¹), farmyard manure, vermicompost, poultry manure, biovermi, bone meal, wood ash, Trichoderma viride, and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Biometric, floral, and fruit characteristics were recorded, and the data were analysed using MSTAT.C, with treatment means compared by DMRT. The treatment comprising RDF + vermicompost (13 kg plant⁻¹) + T. viride (5 g plant⁻¹) + P. fluorescens (10 g plant⁻¹) recorded the greatest plant height, collar girth, fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight, fruit volume, seed number, and fruit yield. This treatment produced 42.59 kg fruit plant⁻¹. RDF + poultry manure (10 kg plant⁻¹) + the two bio-inoculants recorded the highest number of fruits per plant and a yield of 40.93 kg plant⁻¹. Fully organic treatments yielded less than the integrated nutrient treatments. Under the conditions of this study, combining RDF with vermicompost and bio-inoculants was the most effective nutrient-management treatment for papaya cv. CO 7.

Malaysia’s heavy reliance on imported soy-based feed ingredients poses significant
challenges to both food security and sustainability in its livestock sector. As an
underutilised legume with high protein content and strong ecological adaptability,
Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC. (jackbean) offers a promising local alternative. This study
investigated the combined effects of different growing media (clay, cocopeat, sandy soil,
and topsoil) and organic amendments (control, composted chicken manure, green manure,
and biochar) on the growth performance and yield of jackbean. The experiment was
conducted using a randomised complete block design (RCBD) with five replications, and
plants were harvested after 12 weeks. The data on plant height, number of leaves, number
of branches, pod length, pod number, flower production, chlorophyll content, shoot
biomass, and root biomass were analysed using two-way ANOVA in RStudio. The results
demonstrated that sandy soil amended with green manure (GM) consistently produced the
highest values for plant height (185.61 cm), number of leaves (84.90), number of branches
(33.63) and pod length (17.00 cm). GM in topsoil had higher chlorophyll content (33.08),
while it had the highest shoot dry weight (56.18 g) and root dry weight (6.48 g) in
cocopeat. GM showed the most robust and consistent enhancement across all media types,
indicating its superior nutrient supply and positive effects on rhizosphere microbial
activity. In contrast, biochar amended performed poorly, particularly when applied in
sandy and topsoil, likely due to poor drainage and nutrient immobilisation. These findings
revealed the importance of selecting optimal combinations of organic inputs and soil
media to maximise jackbean productivity and highlight their potential as a sustainable
crop for protein-rich feed production, supporting the efforts to reduce Malaysia's
dependency on soybean imports and enhance agroecological resilience. This study aligns
with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and
SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting sustainable crop
management and enhancing food security.

In the face of growing demand for vegetable crops, particularly solanaceous species, the excessive use of synthetic fertilisers and the degradation of arable soils are major constraints on agricultural production in West African urban and peri-urban areas. Soilless cultivation is therefore gaining importance as an alternative production system that is less dependent on soil quality. This study compared the effects of four liquid fertilisers - two organic (a poultry manure extract and a manure-based fertiliser) and two mineral fertilisers (Nutrigofol 8-8-8 and NPK 12-22-22, with the latter serving as the control) - on the growth and yield of pepper grown under soilless conditions, with the broader aim of identifying nutrient solutions that could reduce growers’ dependence on chemical fertilisers. The trial followed a randomised complete block design with four replicates. Treatment had a significant effect on most growth and yield parameters (p < 0.001). The organic fertilisers, particularly the poultry manure extract, produced significantly higher values than the mineral fertilisers for floral bud number, fruit number, fruit mass, and estimated yield. Estimated yield reached 5.11 t ha⁻¹ with the poultry manure extract, followed by the manure-based fertiliser (3.69 t ha⁻¹), Nutrigofol 8-8-8 (2.81 t ha⁻¹), and NPK 12-22-22 (2.64 t ha⁻¹). Because no unfertilised control was included, these results describe the relative performance of the four fertilisers rather than their absolute agronomic efficiency. Within this comparative scope, the findings indicate that organic nutrient solutions derived from locally available livestock waste can support pepper productivity in soilless systems at least as well as, and for several parameters better than, the mineral fertilisers tested. Valorising such organic waste as low-cost biofertilisers could contribute to more affordable and resilient vegetable production for expanding West African cities, provided these trends are confirmed against an unfertilised control and under real production conditions.

This study evaluated the effects of banana peel liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and chicken manure on the growth and yield components of soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivated in Andisol soil. The experiment was conducted from December 2020 to April 2021 at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara, using a factorial randomized block design with two factors: four doses of banana peel liquid organic fertilizer (0, 50, 100, and 150 mL polybag⁻¹) and four rates of chicken manure (0, 5, 10, and 15 t ha⁻¹). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that banana peel liquid organic fertilizer significantly increased the number of branches and the weight of 100 seeds but had no significant effect on plant height, stem diameter, or the number of pods. Chicken manure significantly increased stem diameter, number of branches, number of pods, and weight of 100 seeds, whereas its effect on plant height was not significant. No significant interaction was observed between banana peel liquid organic fertilizer and chicken manure for any of the observed variables. These findings indicate that both organic fertilizers independently improved soybean growth and yield components in Andisol soil, although their combined application did not produce a synergistic effect. Further studies involving comprehensive soil characterization, nutrient uptake, and economic evaluation are recommended to better understand the agronomic potential of banana peel liquid organic fertilizer under different environmental conditions.
