Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research Activity on Stroke Mortality: 1961–2024

Abstract

Abstract Introduction This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global stroke mortality research, by assessing publication trends, top authors, institutions, countries, and thematic analysis of keywords. Methods We performed a bibliometric analysis using Web of Science data retrieved on December 21, 2024, based on title searches for “Stroke mortality,” “CVA mortality,” “Cerebral infarction mortality,” and “Cerebrovascular accident mortality.” We generated descriptive statistics, investigated publication and citation trends, and performed advanced mappings for keyword frequency and thematic evolution. Results Of 2,261 stroke mortality documents from 636 journals (1961–2024), the annual growth was 1.73%. Each document averaged 37.7 citations, with 46,494 total references. This study included 14,456 authors (48 single‐authored) and averaged 8.89 coauthors per document; 21.32% involved international collaboration. Publication output increased markedly post‐2000, peaking with 1,171 studies in 2017–2024. Stroke (246 articles) was the most productive journal followed by Journal of Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases (137); the USA (2,975 articles) and China (2,536) dominated global output. Wang Y led as the most prolific author (77 articles), and Capital Medical University in China produced the highest number of publications (143). Collaboration networks featured strong multinational clusters led by the USA, China, and key European nations. Conclusion This bibliometric analysis showed a steady but modest research growth, with the USA and China leading in output and citation. Thematic shifts revealed movement from clinical risk factors to public health and biological predictors. While strong international collaborations exist, regional partnerships remain limited in areas like Africa and Latin America.

Research Hotspots and Development Trends of Reablement From 1999 to 2025: A Bibliometric Analysis

Aims: This study aims to explore the current research status, hotspots, and emerging trends of reablement and provide references for further research in this field. Methods: English-language literature related to reablement was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database, covering the period from January 1, 1999 to October 20, 2025. The software CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct visual bibliometric analyses of eligible publications, including annual publication output, countries, authors, institutions, cited references, and keywords. Results: A total of 276 publications were included. Overall, the number of publications showed an increasing trend over time. The United States contributed the largest number of publications, followed by Australia and Norway, and Resnick was the most productive author. The top five keywords by frequency were “older adults”, “reablement”, “intervention”, “people”, and “physical activity”. Intervention studies and qualitative studies were the main research types, with application-focused research hotspots primarily concentrated on improving physical activity among service recipients. Conclusions: Research on reablement has attracted increasing attention. Future studies should focus on conducting high-quality empirical research to identify optimal intervention strategies, as well as sensitive assessment tools and outcome indicators. In addition, researchers are encouraged to draw on existing experiences to actively promote home-based reablement services and explore the development of reablement models tailored to national contexts.

Global research trends and emerging frontiers in young-onset stroke: a bibliometric analysis (1996–2026)

Objective Young-onset stroke (YOS) has increasing public health relevance. This study mapped global research trends, hotspots, and emerging frontiers in YOS from 1996 to 2026. Methods English articles and reviews from 1996 to 2026 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, yielding 5,249 records after screening. PubMed was analyzed for external validation, with 2,929 eligible records. bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used to analyze publication output, collaboration networks, keywords, bursts, and co-citations. A strict title-field subset evaluated search-strategy sensitivity. Results Publication output increased markedly after 2018. The United States and China were the leading contributors. Major topics included ischemic stroke, risk factors, cardiovascular comorbidity, etiologic evaluation, acute treatment, rehabilitation, and survivorship. Recent bursts indicated growing attention to disease burden, mechanical thrombectomy, medical therapy, stroke survivors, quality of life, fatigue, unmet needs, and machine learning. PubMed validation and strict title-field sensitivity analysis supported the main temporal and thematic patterns. Conclusion YOS research has expanded into a multidimensional field. Future work should prioritize harmonized definitions, multinational data resources, age-specific etiologic and treatment studies, long-term cognitive and psychosocial outcomes, and rehabilitation.

The global landscape of aging and exercise research (1922-2024): A multi-dataset bibliometric mapping and thematic evolution analysis.

PURPOSE Exercise and physical activity are essential for promoting healthy aging by improving physical function, preventing cognitive decline, and reducing chronic disease risk. Despite increasing research output, a comprehensive bibliometric synthesis of aging and exercise research (AER), particularly its intellectual structure and emerging trends, remains limited. This study aimed to map the evolution and thematic structure of AER. METHODS Bibliographic data were retrieved from the Scopus database (as of 13 December 2024). Three datasets (N1 = 11,751; N2 = 4722; N3 = 3880) covering different periods and core sources were analyzed. Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used to assess publication trends, author productivity, collaboration networks, thematic evolution, keyword co-occurrence, and co-citation patterns. RESULTS AER publications increased substantially after 1980, with peak citation impact in 1991 (412.67 citations/article). Publication output reached 1086 articles in 2024, while recent citation averages declined due to recency effects. The Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and Journals of Gerontology were identified as core sources. The United States led in productivity and collaboration, and McAuley E. was the most prolific author. Author productivity followed Lotka's law, with 71.9% of authors contributing a single article. Key themes included physical activity, aging, and exercise, with emerging topics such as sarcopenia, telerehabilitation, and multicomponent exercise. CONCLUSION This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of AER, identifying key contributors, core sources, and emerging trends, and offers insights to guide future interdisciplinary research and promote healthy aging.

Knowledge landscape and hotspots of scientific publications on myocarditis: a bibliometric analysis from 2000 to 2024.

ABSTRACT We performed a bibliometric analysis of myocarditis publications from 2000 to 2024, with the aim of synthesising current research and identifying emerging trends in the field. We retrieved scientific publications on myocarditis from the Web of Science (WOS) database spanning from January 2000 to December 2024. Only English-language original articles and reviews were included. Relevant information such as journal and publisher details, titles, authors, organisations, abstracts, keywords, publication dates and citation counts was extracted. We then conducted bibliometric analysis and visualised the results using R software and Microsoft Excel. The WOS database search yielded 15,387 records on myocarditis, comprising 12,566 articles and 2821 reviews. These publications were from 133 countries and regions, 12,490 research institutions and 64,899 scholars. The annual number of scientific publications on myocarditis increased at a rate of 6.75%. We further analysed the top ten contributing countries, research organisations, influential researchers, most cited articles and frequent keywords associated with myocarditis. Keyword trend analysis identified the most active research areas, including coronavirus disease 2019 and myocarditis, immune-related mechanisms and immunotherapy, myocarditis associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, advanced diagnostic methods (e.g. endomyocardial biopsy and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging) and various fatal clinical complications. The results of the bibliometric analysis of publication trends in myocarditis from 2000 to 2024 provide deeper insights into the existing literature on myocarditis.

Publication Output and Internationalization Among a Defined Population of Italian Forest Researchers: A Bibliometric Assessment, 2013–2025

National bibliometric assessments can show how scientific communities change, but their results depend strongly on how the researcher population is defined. This paper assessed publication output, citation patterns, institutional structure, and collaboration for a defined Italian forest research population. Population identification was completed in February–March 2026 by combining a Scopus-derived researcher database with the official 2025 Ministry of University and Research staff lists for the relevant forest disciplines. The final study population comprised 250 researchers. All Scopus-indexed publications associated with these author IDs during 2013–2025 were retrieved through the Scopus API in June 2026; the primary corpus was not restricted by forest-topic screening. The corpus contained 9918 unique publications. Annual output associated with the study population increased from 449 publications in 2013 to 971 in 2025, while publication-active researchers increased from 148 to 236. Mean fractional output per active researcher increased from 3.13 publications per year in 2013–2015 to 4.08 in 2023–2025. A persistent-author subset of 188 researchers observed in both periods also exhibited higher late-period output, indicating that recent entry alone did not account for the increase. Internationally co-authored publications increased from 38.7% to 60.7%, and the top 10% of publications received 52.4% of all citations. A conservative title/source forest-signal subset reproduced the increasing output pattern. The results refer to the defined end-of-period study population rather than to a complete historical census, but provide a documented basis for future monitoring.

Research trends in peritoneal dialysis literature: a bibliometric and topic-modeling analysis of PubMed publications from 2016 to 2025.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to characterize the contemporary landscape of peritoneal dialysis (PD) research published between 2016 and 2025 using PubMed-indexed publications. METHODS This bibliometric and text-mining study analyzed publications related to PD indexed in PubMed from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2025. Author keywords were standardized using text normalization. Abstracts were preprocessed using tokenization, stop-word removal, and term normalization to improve topic-modeling performance. Topic modeling was then applied to the processed abstracts to identify latent research themes. RESULTS A total of 9,620 PD-related publications were identified between 2016 and 2025, with the annual output increasing from 838 publications in 2016 to 1,128 in 2025. The mean number of author keywords per publication was 3.89±2.99. A keyword analysis identified hemodialysis, peritonitis, mortality, kidney transplantation, and coronavirus disease 2019 as the major research themes. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed three thematic clusters related to dialysis modalities, PD complications, and patient outcomes. Topic modeling identified nine major research topics, with "Catheter complications" and "Mortality and outcomes" remaining the most prevalent throughout the study period. Notably, the prevalence of "Home dialysis" increased from 14.4% to 19.8%, indicating a growing research interest in patient-centered and home-based treatment strategies. CONCLUSION Emerging interest in home dialysis, patient-centered care, and peritoneal fibrosis suggests a shift toward optimizing long-term treatment experience and technique survival.
