Assessment of Sustainable Agricultural Practices and Their Impact on Farm Income
Abstract
Sustainable agricultural practices have gained considerable importance as effective approaches for improving agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources and enhancing farmers' livelihoods. Increasing concerns over soil degradation, declining water availability, climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising production costs have encouraged the adoption of environmentally sound farming practices that ensure long-term agricultural sustainability. Sustainable agricultural practices include conservation agriculture, integrated nutrient management, integrated pest management, crop diversification, organic farming, agroforestry, precision agriculture, efficient irrigation systems, residue management, and climate-smart farming techniques. These practices aim to optimize resource utilization, improve soil health, reduce environmental pollution, and increase farm resilience to climatic uncertainties. Besides environmental benefits, sustainable farming has significant economic implications by reducing input costs, improving crop productivity, enhancing product quality, and generating higher farm income. However, the extent of economic benefits varies depending on farmers' socio-economic conditions, farm size, access to technology, market opportunities, and institutional support. This study assesses the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and evaluates their impact on farm income, resource-use efficiency, production costs, and livelihood improvement. It also examines the major factors influencing adoption, including education, extension services, government incentives, market access, and financial support, while identifying key barriers such as limited awareness, inadequate technical knowledge, financial constraints, and infrastructure deficiencies. The findings emphasize that strengthening extension services, improving policy support, promoting capacity building, facilitating access to credit, and encouraging climate-resilient farming systems can accelerate the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, leading to increased farm profitability, improved environmental quality, enhanced food security, and sustainable rural development.
