It is demonstrated that digital media functions not only as a communication platform but also as an important mechanism for cultural preservation, adaptation, and identity reconstruction.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly influenced the way local cultures are represented, preserved, and transformed in contemporary society. In Indonesia, digital media has created new opportunities for cultural communities to disseminate local traditions, strengthen cultural awareness, and engage younger generations in cultural preservation efforts. However, the increasing integration of digital platforms also introduces challenges related to cultural adaptation, authenticity, and changes in cultural identity. This study aims to analyze the influence of digital media on the reconfiguration of local culture in Indonesia. A quantitative research approach was applied using survey data collected from 200 respondents who actively engage with digital media platforms and have experience accessing local cultural content online. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. The analysis involved validity testing, reliability testing, descriptive statistical analysis, classical assumption testing, and simple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that digital media has a positive and significant influence on local cultural reconfiguration. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R² = 0.468) indicates that digital media utilization explains 46.8% of the variation in local cultural reconfiguration. These findings demonstrate that digital media functions not only as a communication platform but also as an important mechanism for cultural preservation, adaptation, and identity reconstruction. This study contributes to understanding how technological development influences cultural sustainability in Indonesia and highlights the importance of utilizing digital platforms strategically to maintain cultural values while encouraging innovation.

Digital convergence and the empowerment dilemma in Indonesian alternative media

This study examines We Radio Indonesia (WRI) as a qualitative case study of media convergence in a youth-oriented alternative media context between April 2020 and February 2023. The research uses virtual ethnography and multimodal text analysis, backed by ongoing online observation and in-depth interviews with ten participants, including managers, programmers, broadcasters, and listeners. The findings suggest that WRI used social media and online radio broadcasting to facilitate forms of youth participation, provide spaces for entrepreneurial learning, and promote local cultural content. These practices indicate how community-based media may support forms of social and economic engagement in Global South settings. However, interview and observational data also indicate that limited funding, organizational instability, and uneven digital infrastructure constrained WRI’s long-term sustainability. These factors affected the station’s ability to maintain consistent production and operations. This study moves beyond viewing media convergence as a purely technical process. It highlights how organizational capacity, management practices, and local socio-cultural context shape digital media practices. The findings offer context-specific insights that contribute to ongoing discussions of media convergence and youth-oriented digital media in Indonesia.

Strengthening Digital Literacy to Build a Civilized Indonesia in the Digital Space

Social media has emerged as a new communication technology, replacing the traditional era of written correspondence. It enables people to receive and share information in real time, offering a level of speed and accessibility that was not available in previous generations. However, while social media provides numerous benefits, it also has negative impacts, including addiction and the decline of ethical behavior in digital spaces. Furthermore, a recent study found that Indonesia ranks as the least digitally courteous country in Southeast Asia. Three main factors contribute to this ranking: the high prevalence of cyberbullying, hate speech, and the spread of misinformation (hoaxes). In response to these issues, a Community Service Program focusing on digital literacy was implemented. The program aims to enhance public awareness and understanding of the importance of ethical behavior on social media as an essential aspect of living in a digital society. One approach to strengthening digital ethics is through public education on the applicable legal framework, particularly Indonesia's Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law. The program also emphasizes the importance of reducing the amount of time spent on social media, as excessive use may lead to addiction and negatively affect mental health. As an alternative, participants are introduced to various productive activities that can be pursued outside social media or are encouraged to use social media more effectively and responsibly within a reasonable amount of time.

It highlights how digital platforms enable real-time communication, cultural exchange, and increased global awareness by allowing people to share traditions, languages, and values. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the study emphasizes the role of Web 2.0 and user-generated content in making cultural participation more accessible. The paper also discusses how mobile technologies help bridge the digital divide, giving underserved communities a platform to express their cultural identities globally. However, it addresses challenges like cultural homogenization, unequal access, and dominance of certain cultural narratives. Overall, the study concludes that while technology is a powerful tool for cultural exchange and globalization, careful policies are needed to preserve cultural diversity, authenticity, and inclusiveness

Exploring digital transformation of journalism in Bangladesh: Trends, opportunities and challenges

The advancement of digital technologies has revolutionized journalistic practices worldwide, yet empirical research on how these changes are unfolding within Bangladesh’s evolving media landscape remains limited. To address this gap, this study investigates how digital technologies are reshaping news production, dissemination and professional standards, and what opportunities and challenges these shifts create for journalists and media organizations. Guided by technological determinism and media convergence theories, the study explores how technological forces and cross-platform integration drive structural and cultural change in Bangladeshi journalism. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with journalists from television, online and print media. The results show that smartphones, social media and affordable multimedia tools have significantly simplified news production, allowing journalists to work as independent, multi-skilled content creators. Digital platforms have expanded audience reach, accelerated news dissemination and enhanced interactive participation, thereby creating new revenue streams and global employment opportunities. However, the digital transformation has also increased challenges, including the spread of misinformation, the decline of journalistic standards among untrained content creators and outdated journalism curricula that do not meet technological demands. Theoretically, the study refines technological determinism by placing technological influence within social and professional constraints and broadens media convergence by illustrating its uneven development in a resource-limited media environment. Overall, this research deepens understanding of digital transformation in media landscapes of the Global South and underscores the vital need to foster digitally skilled and ethically aware journalistic practices in Bangladesh.

Strengthening the Role of MUI in Digital Literacy on the Dangers of Radicalism to Reinforce National Resilience

Digital transformation in Indonesia has increased internet penetration to 80.66% of the national population. This condition has provided positive impacts on information technology development, but at the same time has created new threats in the form of radicalism dissemination through cyberspace. Young people, especially Generation Z, are the most vulnerable group exposed to radical propaganda through social media, short-video platforms, online games, and digital communication applications. This study aims to analyze the strengthening of the role of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in digital literacy regarding the dangers of radicalism in order to strengthen National Resilience. The study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach through literature review of official documents, MUI fatwas, government reports, and institutional data contained in the Individual Working Paper of the National Leadership Consolidation Education (P3N) XXVII Lemhannas RI 2026. The results indicate that the threat of digital radicalism is increasing due to low public digital literacy and the dominance of exclusive religious narratives in cyberspace. MUI possesses moral legitimacy and a high level of public trust as a national religious authority; however, the implementation of moderate digital preaching remains suboptimal. Therefore, strengthening strategies are needed through MUI digital transformation, integration of national religious digital literacy, strengthening cyber preachers, early warning systems for radical narratives, youth protection based on family and community, and strengthening cyberspace regulations. These strategies are expected to improve society’s cognitive immunity against radical ideologies and strengthen Indonesia’s National Resilience.
