Abstract

This study is grounded in the importance of Arabic language learning as a medium for constructing Islamic identity within Salafi communities, where language functions not only as a tool of communication but also as a marker of religious ideology and cultural belonging. The purpose of this study is to examine how Arabic learning practices contribute to the construction of Islamic identity in the Salafi community of Kendari City through the perspective of Manhaj Salaf culture. The partners involved in this study are members of the Salafi community, including religious teachers (ustadz), halaqah participants, and learners engaged in non-formal Arabic learning activities. This study employs a qualitative approach with a cultural-phenomenological design, utilizing observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection methods. The findings reveal that Arabic language learning in the Salafi community is systematically integrated with doctrinal values, serving as a means of internalizing Salafi religious identity, strengthening ideological commitment, and differentiating communal religious expressions. Arabic is positioned as both a sacred language and a symbol of authenticity in practicing Islam according to the Salaf manhaj. These results highlight the strategic role of Arabic learning in reinforcing religious identity and cultural continuity within Salafi communities, underscoring the importance of language-based religious education in sustaining ideological coherence and communal solidarity.
