Evaluation of Micro-Irrigation Systems in Improving Water Productivity in Horticultural Crops

Abstract

Water scarcity has emerged as one of the most significant constraints to sustainable horticultural production worldwide. Increasing competition for freshwater resources, climate change, irregular rainfall patterns, and declining groundwater levels have emphasized the need for efficient irrigation technologies that maximize crop productivity while minimizing water consumption. Micro-irrigation systems, including drip irrigation, micro-sprinklers, bubblers, and subsurface drip irrigation, deliver water directly to the root zone in controlled quantities, thereby reducing evaporation, runoff, deep percolation, and nutrient losses. These systems significantly improve water-use efficiency, nutrient-use efficiency, crop yield, fruit quality, and economic returns while conserving natural resources. Micro-irrigation is particularly effective in horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, and plantation crops because these crops require precise moisture management for optimum growth and productivity. Integration of fertigation, soil moisture sensors, Internet of Things (IoT)-based irrigation scheduling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and precision agriculture technologies has further enhanced irrigation efficiency and decision-making. These innovations enable real-time monitoring of soil moisture, crop water requirements, and environmental conditions, resulting in improved water productivity and sustainable crop management. Despite numerous advantages, adoption of micro-irrigation remains constrained by high installation costs, maintenance requirements, clogging of emitters, and limited technical knowledge among farmers. This paper evaluates different micro-irrigation systems, examines their impact on water productivity and horticultural crop performance, discusses their contribution to sustainable agriculture, and explores emerging technologies and future prospects for precision irrigation.
