Fragmentation and asymmetry in local wisdom and science literacy research: A decade bibliometric synthesis

Abstract

Local wisdom and science literacy are increasingly recognized as complementary foundations for culturally responsive and contextually relevant education. However, the extent to which these two domains have been integrated within educational research remains unclear. This study aims to map the evolution, thematic structure, and intellectual foundations of research on local wisdom and science literacy. A bibliometric approach was employed to analyze 1,016 journal articles indexed in the Scopus database and published between 2016 and 2025. Bibliographic data were processed using the Bibliometrix package in R through the Biblioshiny interface to examine annual scientific production, source distribution, country productivity, citation patterns, keyword co-occurrence, cocitation networks, thematic mapping, trend topics, and conceptual structures.The results indicate a substantial increase in publication output over the observed period, with research activity accelerating particularly after 2021. The thematic structure of the field reveals a polarized knowledge architecture in which culturally grounded constructs such as local wisdom, sustainability, and character education coexist with science-oriented constructs including science literacy and science education, yet with limited conceptual integration between them. The geographical distribution of publications demonstrates a strong concentration of empirical production in developing countries, particularly Indonesia, while advanced research systems maintain greater citation influence within the global knowledge network. International collaboration patterns remain largely hub-dependent, reflecting uneven participation across regions. Overall, the findings suggest that research on local wisdom and science literacy has expanded rapidly in volume but remains conceptually fragmented and epistemically asymmetrical. The field continues to develop through parallel thematic trajectories rather than a fully integrated interdisciplinary framework.

Knowledge Mapping of Digital Ethics in Education: A Bibliometric and Science Mapping Analysis

Although digital ethics has become increasingly important in education, systematic evidence on its global research structure and thematic development remains limited. This study aims to map global research on digital ethics in education from 2015 to 2025 using bibliometric analysis and science mapping techniques. Data were retrieved from Scopus, yielding 782 documents published in 466 sources and involving 3,993 authors. The analysis was conducted using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer to examine publication trends, citation impact, collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, co-citation patterns, thematic mapping, and thematic evolution. The findings reveal rapid growth in publication output and interdisciplinary collaboration, indicating the expanding scholarly relevance of digital ethics in educational research. Core keywords, including ethics, education, higher education, and female, form the intellectual backbone of the field. Network, overlay, and density visualizations show a thematic shift from methodological and COVID-19-related topics toward emerging issues such as digital literacy, AI literacy, generative AI, academic integrity, equity, and curricula. High research density remains concentrated around ethics and education, whereas AI-related themes are still comparatively underexplored. These findings highlight opportunities for future research on ethical AI literacy, AI governance, and responsible AI integration in educational curricula. This study contributes a comprehensive knowledge map by identifying leading actors, thematic domains, and research gaps, offering practical guidance for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to promote ethical, equitable, and accountable digital transformation in education.

Research Trends in Science Literacy in Education: A Bibliometric Analysis for the Period 2022-2025

Scientific literacy has become a key competency in contemporary science education, particularly amid the post-pandemic landscape marked by accelerating digitalization, expanding access to information, and growing demand for evidence-based decision-making. Although literature on scientific literacy continues to expand, understanding of recent research developments remains limited. This study aims to examine research trends, intellectual structures, and emerging themes in scientific literacy research within educational contexts from 2022-2025. A bibliometric approach was adopted using data retrieved from the Scopus database through a systematic search and screening process guided by the PRISMA framework, with publications analyzed via Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer to assess publication growth, geographical and institutional contributions, citation performance, and keyword co-occurrence networks. The results indicate a substantial increase in publication output after 2023, with the United States, Indonesia, and China as leading contributors, reflecting the global scope of the field and disparities in national research capacities. Institutional analysis reveals broad participation across universities and research organizations, while citation and keyword analyses point to inquiry-based learning, scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and emerging themes including socioscientific issues and technology-enhanced education. These findings signal a shift toward competency-based frameworks emphasizing reasoning and evidence evaluation, informing curriculum development and future research.

The Evolution and Intellectual Structure of Local Wisdom Research in Indonesian Education: A Fifteen-Year Bibliometric and Systematic Analysis (2010–2025)

The concept of local wisdom has become a significant strategic basis for culturally based education in Indonesia, though the structure of intellectual form and the developmental course of research in this area have yet to be fully synthesized. The paper explores the development and intellectual architecture of local wisdom research in Indonesian education between 2010 and 2025 through an inter-woven bibliometric and systematic approach. Based on PRISMA procedures, 132 studies were selected from 575 records of Scopus-indexed journal articles. The growth of publications, most popular journals, institutional productivity, and international contributions were analyzed using bibliometric mapping, and qualitative thematic synthesis identified the prevalent research clusters and theoretical orientations. According to the findings, a significant growth trend can be observed in recent years, and scholarship is concentrated mostly in Indonesian institutions, with a predominance of the sociocultural and constructivist approaches. Five important thematic areas were identified, reflecting an inclination toward pedagogical application. The paper finds that although the field is growing very fast, it is nationally confined and theoretically fragmented. This study provides intellectual scaffolding and strategic pathways for more rigorous and globally active scholarship by mapping the intellectual architecture of the field.

Growth without coherence? Fragmentation and structural tensions in global research on collaborative learning and critical thinking

The rapid expansion of research on collaborative learning has intensified scholarly attention to its potential for fostering critical thinking across diverse educational contexts. Despite the growing body of literature, there remains limited synthesis regarding how the relationship between collaborative learning and critical thinking is conceptually structured, geographically distributed, and positioned across educational levels, particularly within social studies education. This study aims to map and critically examine the global research landscape on collaborative learning in relation to critical thinking and social studies over the past decade. A bibliometric approach was employed to analyze scholarly publications indexed in the Scopus database between 2016 and 2025. Using Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny, the analysis examined publication trends, citation patterns, country productivity, thematic evolution, and keyword co-occurrence networks to identify the structural dynamics of research in this field. The results reveal a rapidly expanding body of literature characterized by significant structural fragmentation. While certain countries demonstrate high research productivity, their influence within the citation network remains uneven, indicating misalignments between publication output and intellectual impact. Thematic analysis shows that collaborative learning operates as a central conceptual bridge connecting multiple research streams, whereas critical thinking functions as the dominant organizing focus shaping contemporary scholarly discussions. Furthermore, the conceptual structure of the field is strongly concentrated in higher education and professional learning contexts, while primary education and social studies appear comparatively underrepresented.These findings highlight important structural imbalances in the current research landscape and reveal emerging tensions between thematic expansion and conceptual coherence. By providing a systematic mapping of global scholarship, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how collaborative learning and critical thinking are currently framed within educational research and identifies key directions for future theoretical and empirical development.

Intellectual Evolution of Circular Economy Research in Sustainable Universities: A Bibliometric and Science Mapping Analysis

The intensifying global environmental crisis has positioned the circular economy (CE) as a regenerative alternative to the linear economic model, with universities serving as pivotal agents for embedding sustainability principles across research, education, operations, and community engagement. Despite growing interest, the scholarly landscape at the intersection of CE and sustainable universities remains fragmented. This study addresses this gap through a comprehensive bibliometric review of 233 empirical journal articles retrieved from Scopus (2003–June 2026). Employing PRISMA-guided screening, data harmonization via Bibliomagika, and analytical tools including Biblioshiny and VOSviewer, the research examined publication trends, collaboration networks, intellectual structures, and thematic clusters. Results indicate exponential growth in publications since 2018, peaking in 2024–2025, reflecting heightened academic engagement aligned with global sustainability agendas. Collaboration networks reveal highly interconnected international communities, with prominent hubs in Europe and Asia facilitating knowledge exchange. Co-citation and bibliographic coupling analyses uncover an interdisciplinary intellectual foundation linking sustainability science, environmental management, and higher education studies. Keyword co-occurrence mapping identifies four major thematic clusters: educational and sustainability dimensions, operational resource recovery, institutional waste management and governance, and technological innovation with life cycle approaches. These findings position universities as living laboratories for circular practices while highlighting opportunities for deeper cross-regional collaboration and longitudinal impact studies. The review offers scholars, policymakers, and university administrators a structured roadmap to address research gaps and accelerate CE integration in higher education. By synthesizing evolutionary patterns, collaborative dynamics, and emerging frontiers, this study contributes to strengthening the theoretical and practical foundations for sustainable university transitions.

Economic Literacy Research Worldwide: Insights from a Scopus Bibliometric Map

Economic literacy has become increasingly strategic amid ongoing digitalization and macroeconomic uncertainty; however, its research landscape has yet to be comprehensively mapped across themes, actors, and publication channels. Method: This study employs a Scopus-based bibliometric analysis (search conducted on September 26, 2025) using the keyword “economic literacy” in titles, abstracts, and keywords. From an initial 287 records, 259 English-language documents (articles, conference papers, and reviews) were selected through relevance and inclusion–exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using Excel, Publish or Perish, and VOSviewer to map publication trends, affiliations, sources/journals, countries, and keyword networks (co-authorship, co-citation, co-occurrence, and overlay). Results: Publications have risen sharply since 2016, peaking in 2024, with sustained activity in 2025. The Journal of Economic Education emerged as the leading outlet. Prominent affiliations originate from the United States and Europe, with strong contributions from Indonesia (notably Universitas Negeri Malang and Universitas Negeri Jakarta). The main contributing countries include the United States, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. The keyword mapping reveals core clusters centered on economic literacy interlinked with financial literacy, economic education, students, and entrepreneurial intention, along with emerging themes such as digital economy, decision making, and sustainable development. Discussion/Conclusion: Economic literacy has evolved from a peripheral topic to a mainstream, increasingly interdisciplinary field. Recommendations include transparent reporting of network parameters, normalization of citation data across years, expansion of terminology and databases, and strengthening of longitudinal or quasi-experimental designs that link literacy outcomes with actual behavioral measures.
