The Middle Path of Indonesian Islam and the Model of Muslim Relations in China: Prospects and Challenges of Inter-Civilizational Dialogue

Sep 2026 · Journal of Islamic Studies & Social Science · 0 citations

Abstract

This study examines the potential of Jalan Tengah Islam Indonesia (The Middle Path of Indonesian Islam) as a bridge for inter-civilizational dialogue, aiming to foster understanding and mitigate tensions between the Islamic world and China. This issue is relevant amidst the complexity of China's relationship with its Muslim communities and the emergence of Indonesia's model of religious moderation. Using a qualitative literature review approach, this article synthesizes findings from various scholarly journals, books, and reports published in the last five years. The results indicate that the principles of Wasatiyyat al-Islam, such as tolerance and inclusivity, are highly relevant; however, their implementation faces significant structural challenges, particularly due to differences in political systems. Key findings reveal a selective acceptance from the Chinese side toward non-political religious diplomacy. Conceptually, this research contributes by positioning a religious model as a practical resource for soft power in inter-civilizational diplomacy, offering new insights for academics and practitioners on promoting global peace amidst complex civilizational differences.
