Nigeria's First Open-Water Riserless Cement Evaluation and Well Securing Operation

Abstract

Isolating hydrocarbon-bearing and over-pressured reservoirs in subsea wells is traditionally complex and costly, often requiring drilling rigs or marine vessels equipped with risers. This paper presents Nigeria's first deepwater riserless well-securing campaign on four suspended appraisal wells, delivering significant reductions in cost and time while meeting industry best practices. The approach effectively mitigated well integrity risks posed by hydrocarbons and over-pressured sands with flow potential behind casing. The wells contained open-hole intervals suspended with mechanical and/or cement plugs, and a brownfield survey confirmed no hydrocarbon seepage, enabling a riserless solution. The scope included an innovative corrosion cap retrieval and reinstallation using the vessel crane and sandlines, supported by a bespoke ROV tool; behind-casing cement integrity evaluation; and placement of permanent cement plugs via coiled tubing to achieve rock-to-rock isolation. These activities were executed in optimized batch operations for efficiency. Key considerations included sea-state impact on depth control for slickline and wireline, seawater corrosion on wireline, coiled tubing buckling, and cement contamination risks. This approach delivered 40–50% cost savings, eliminated safety hazards associated with riser-based methods, and provided a replicable workflow, decision matrix, and benchmarks for time and cost—offering a safer, more efficient model for future deepwater well-securing campaigns.

Cost-Effective Sand Control Remediation in HPHT Gas Wells: A Rigless Through-Tubing Straddle System

High-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) gas wells that are completed across unconsolidated sands are vulnerable to formation sand production, which can significantly impact production performance, erode surface infrastructure, and pose long-term well integrity risks. This paper presents the design considerations, qual...

Breaking Boundaries in Well Design: A Sustainable, High-Performance Approach for UAE Unconventional Oil Exploratory Wells

Efficient drilling and high‑quality formation evaluation remain central challenges in UAE field operator company unconventional exploration program, where shale‑dominated intervals exhibit low permeability, reactive mineralogy, and narrow operational margins. Historically, Water‑Based Mud (WBM) has been used in pilot...

Optimizing the Cement Performance on Wells Subjected to Losses and Revolutionizing Wellbore Integrity: With External Casing Packer Ensuring Long-Term Wellbore Integrity – A Pakistan Case Study

In this case study, drilling into unexpectedly weak formations led to inadequate cement behind the 13-3/8-in. and 9-5/8-in. casings, threatening well integrity. A robust solution combined advanced formation strengthening using non-reservoir-damaging chemicals and deployment of four external casing packers (ECPs). Thi...

Sustainable Casing Design for Water Supply Wells: Fewer Casings, Faster Drilling, and Protected Aquifers

Water supply wells often require large open-hole intervals across aquifers to deliver high yields with high-capacity pumps, which traditionally necessitates heavy multi-string casing. This abstract presents a new casing configuration that streamlines the well design by using two successive open-hole sections in place...

Multizone Isolation with Lightweight Cement Slurry in a Cased-And-Perforated Well in a Mature Offshore Field, Brunei

Effective zonal isolation in multilayered and depleted reservoir sands remains a persistent challenge in mature fields in Brunei, particularly for cased hole completions where the prevention of interzonal crossflow of reservoir fluid is critical. In the subject well, a conventional 14.0-lbm/gal Class G cement slurry...
