Financial Systems and Sustainability Outcomes: A Panel Investigation of Emerging Markets

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the impact of financial inclusion and foreign direct investment (FDI) on sustainable development outcomes in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries. While previous research has explored the role of financial development and international investment separately, limited attention has been given to how financial inclusion contributes to sustainability within the BRI framework while considering the influence of global capital flows. The study aims to address this research gap by examining whether broader financial access supports sustainable development in emerging economies. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study employs a balanced panel dataset covering 29 BRI countries from 2001 to 2021. Panel data econometric techniques are applied to analyses the relationship between financial inclusion, FDI, and sustainable development. Various specification tests are conducted to determine the most appropriate estimation method, ensuring the reliability and robustness of empirical findings. Findings:  The findings indicate that financial inclusion has a positive but complex relationship with sustainable development in BRI economies. Although improved access to financial services contributes to sustainability outcomes, its effectiveness depends on financial system efficiency, productive allocation of resources, and institutional quality. Implications/Originality/Value: This study provides important policy implications for BRI countries by highlighting the need to combine financial inclusion strategies with strong institutions, sustainable investment policies, and effective financial governance. The research extends existing literature by providing new evidence on how financial integration and international investment flows jointly influence sustainability.
