Abstract

Understanding everyday cultural knowledge remains a fundamental challenge for large language models (LLMs). This paper presents L OCU P ROMPT , a multilingual framework for SemEval-2026 Task 7: Everyday Knowledge Across Diverse Languages and Cultures . To address Short Answer Questions (SAQ), we employ an English-pivot generation strategy with back-translation, combined with empirical locale-specific routing that dynamically assigns the optimal LLM to each target region. For Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ), we apply parameter-efficient fine-tuning to a robust multilingual base model, utilizing locale-aware instructions that frame the LLM as a “local resident.” By integrating strategic model selection with resource-efficient adaptation, L OCU P ROMPT effectively bridges cross-lingual cultural gaps while maintaining a fully reproducible pipeline.

BavGround: A Benchmark for Regional Cultural Grounding and Dialect Competence in Bavarian

Cultural evaluation of large language models (LLMs) often focuses on high-resource standard languages, leaving regional culture and dialect communities underrepresented. We introduce BavGround, a benchmark for evaluating Bavarian regional cultural grounding and dialect competence across English, German and Bavarian. BavGround contains 206 multiple-choice source questions across eight cultural domains per language, yielding 618 multi-parallel instances, with items covering both broadly accessible cultural knowledge and source-grounded regional knowledge from journalism, historical sources, and specialist literature. We evaluate fifteen 7B-10B open-weight instruction-tuned models and one closed-model reference. Strong multilingual models perform best overall, but performance drops on Bavarian items and source-grounded questions, indicating persistent difficulty with dialectal and localized cultural knowledge. We further show that conclusions depend strongly on evaluation protocol: raw answer-letter scoring, shuffled-letter scoring, option-text likelihood, generated-answer parsing, and semantic matching can produce different absolute scores and rankings, especially for regionally adapted models. Finally, an exploratory analysis of GENBA-10B checkpoints suggests that continued pretraining improves answer-content likelihood unevenly across domains, while dialect competence remains comparatively weak. BavGround supports localized, protocol-aware evaluation of cultural representation in LLMs.

L3Cube-IndicQuest v2: A Large-Scale Multilingual Benchmark for Evaluating Factual Knowledge of Large Language Models Across Indic Languages

We present L3Cube-IndicQuest v2, a large-scale gold-standard multilingual question-answering benchmark for evaluating the India-specific factual knowledge of Large Language Models (LLMs). The benchmark comprises 3,471 curriculum-grounded English question--answer pairs spanning nine domains, curated from educational curricula, competitive examination materials, and domain-specific reference books. We introduce a practical hybrid construction strategy that combines context-grounded LLM-based question generation and validation with semantic deduplication and human verification, enabling scalable creation of benchmark data while preserving annotation quality. The benchmark is translated into 19 Indic languages, yielding a publicly released multilingual dataset of 69,420 question--answer pairs across 20 languages. We evaluate six LLMs under three protocols: LLM-as-a-judge and two deterministic lexical criteria, exact-substring and word-overlap matching. All three produce almost the same model ranking, showing that the results do not depend on the choice of judge. The frontier commercial model leads by a wide margin, and among open-weight models Gemma4 31B outperforms the Indic-specialised Sarvam 30B in every evaluated Indic language.

When Trivia Is Not Trivial: Everyday Knowledge Failures in Multilingual LLMs

Quiz rooms, trivia nights, and quiz shows challenge human knowledge across a wide range of topics, from canonical facts to everyday culture. In this paper, we examine whether large language models (LLMs) can perform competitively in such settings, using quiz-style questions to test them on both common and niche topics. We introduce TriviaRoomQA, a multilingual benchmark designed to evaluate everyday, culturally grounded, and long-tail knowledge across 288 topics. The benchmark contains 3,300 parallel multiple-choice questions in six European languages and additional 5,340 French-only questions for a more fine-grained case study. We evaluate 30 open-weight LLMs from European, Asian, and North American providers, covering models from 7 to 70B parameters. We find that models are strong on knowledge-intensive topics such as history, geography, and mathematics, but substantially weaker on everyday popular-culture topics such as celebrities, music, movies, and news. Moreover, model performance varies across languages even for the same underlying questions, suggesting that access to factual knowledge is not always language-independent. In sum, our dataset and experiments demonstrate an important knowledge gap which is not captured by existing academic-based saturated benchmarks.

Padamitra: Grounded Glossary Generation for Classical Sanskrit

We introduce grounded glossary generation, a structured task requiring models to recover semantically meaningful Sanskrit phrases and produce translation-grounded meanings from a sloka-translation pair, formalizing the traditional patha commentary practice as an evaluable NLP objective. We construct a benchmark of 31,316 sloka-translation-glossary triples from the Valmiki Ramayana and Srimad Bhagavatam, paired with two metrics: Jaccard for phrase recovery and Meaning Faithfulness for semantic consistency. Across zero-shot, few-shot, and instruction fine-tuned variants of Gemma-3n-E4B, Gemma-3-12B, Phi-4, and Qwen3.5-9B, instruction fine-tuning substantially outperforms prompting, while explicit segmentation yields gains. Error analysis identifies over-segmentation of sandhi and samasa compounds as the dominant failure mode, pointing to morphological modeling as the key bottleneck for faithful Sanskrit lexical decomposition.
