Abstract
In modern urban environments, road congestion and collision risks demand cooperative solutions that extend beyond the capabilities of individual vehicles. This paper presents a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication system that combines embedded machine learning with low-cost wireless modules to enable real-time obstacle detection and alert sharing. Each vehicle node uses a Raspberry Pi with a camera, running a TensorFlow Lite model to detect predefined objects (cow, cat, dog, elephant, person). Upon detection, simple commands are transmitted via UART to an ESP8266 module, which forwards these alerts wirelessly using the lightweight MQTT protocol to nearby vehicles, creating a cooperative awareness network. The system was prototyped and validated on a two-vehicle setup within a budget of approximately INR 14,400. Experimental results confirm reliable object detection (accuracy exceeding 80%) and low-latency message exchange (less than 150 ms), demonstrating the feasibility of affordable V2V cooperative perception for safety applications. The proposed system is cost-effective, modular, and scalable, making it highly suitable for intelligent transportation systems and future autonomous vehicle ecosystems.
The Cooperation Gain metric is introduced to quantify the proportion of cases in which hazard detection depends on inter-vehicle information sharing, and it is shown that on a real-world occluded-pedestrian scenario, cooperation provides an advance warning of at least 1.73 s before the following vehicle’s own detector...

Rural curved roads present safety challenges because terrain, vegetation, and roadway geometry can obstruct drivers' view of approaching vehicles. Conventional warning infrastructure and cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems may be costly or unreliable in remote areas. We present BlindSafe, a low-cost vehicle-to...

Occlusion-induced perception limitations at intersections remain a major safety challenge for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), particularly when buildings, roadside structures, or surrounding traffic block the vehicle’s onboard sensors. This paper presents a roadside unit (RSU)-assisted cooperative perception s...

This paper investigates how cooperative perception can be leveraged for blind spot mitigation and to avoid potential vehicle collisions during lane-changing maneuvers in multi-lane highways. To achieve this goal, a simulation-based study of a lane-changing scenario relying on cooperative perception is comprehensively p...

Driving assistance and autonomous driving are among the fastest-evolving domains of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). However, visually impaired pedestrians (VIPs) remain weakly protected by roadsides or vehicle perception systems, especially when the right of way must be communicated in an accessible and audi...
