The Implementation of School–Parent Partnerships in Strengthening Students’ Character: A Case Study of a Public Elementary School in Central Balikpapan
Abstract
This study aims to describe the implementation of school–parent partnerships in strengthening students’ character at a public elementary school in Central Balikpapan. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research participants consisted of the principal, teachers, and parents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews and observations and analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the implementation of school–parent partnerships was carried out through various collaborative programs, including morning literacy activities, skill classes, educational outings, one-day parent involvement programs, and intensive communication through meetings and WhatsApp groups. These programs contributed to the development of students’ discipline, responsibility, independence, social awareness, and respectful attitudes through habituation and direct experiences. The active involvement of parents in school activities indicates that the partnership extends beyond administrative functions and serves educational and participatory purposes. Although challenges such as parents’ limited time and financial constraints were identified, the school addressed these issues through coordination with the school committee and by designing simple, cost-effective programs tailored to parents’ circumstances. This study highlights that school–parent partnerships constitute an important strategy for sustaining students’ character development through the synergy between school and family environments.
