Aligning Digital Technology Adoption with Operational Leverage: Phased Implementation of Enhanced Asset Management Solution in Upstream Operations
Abstract
Upstream oil and gas operations continue to face persistent inefficiencies driven by fragmented data sources, manual workflows, and prolonged data-to-insight latency. As a result, engineers spend a disproportionate amount of time locating, validating, and reconciling data rather than performing value-adding analysis. These efforts often create several versions of the truth and limiting timely production surveillance, hydrocarbon accounting, and delayed decision-making. Although digital transformation is widely acknowledged as necessary, large-scale technology deployment is often constrained by operational risk, adoption challenges, and organizational readiness. ADNOC generated $500M in value from AI deployment in 2023, yet many digital initiatives fail because technology is not properly aligned with people and processes. To address these limitations, a phased and scalable digitalization strategy was implemented by the Pan Ocean and Newcross Companies, to align existing workflows, operational leverage and digitalization maturity. The solution - RADA AMS (RADA Asset Management Solution) development was scaled into phases to reflect prevailing workflows, data availability, and user capability, by converting operational data into actionable intelligence. As a key lever to the process digitalization, the automation of field data transfer was identified as the fundamental first step, acquisition and reporting workflow for data including daily production, routine well tests, and Maximum Efficiency Rate tests, were digitalized and captured in a centralized cloud database for seamless democratization. The solution was also configured to ensure seamless data validation, approval workflows, and audit controls to establish a single source of truth while significantly reducing data reconciliation effort and improving data consistency across assets. Integration with existing processes was gradual, supporting high adoption rates while minimizing disruption, and offers scalable, customizable reporting. Field deployment demonstrated measurable operational improvements. Data availability shifted from hour- to day-scale latency to near real-time access, enabling faster production surveillance and response. Engineering effort devoted to manual data collation and validation was reduced, allowing greater focus on analysis and optimization activities. Reporting cycles that previously required multiple manual iterations were shortened to single-cycle automated outputs. Overall operational efficiency improved by about 30%, freeing technical staff from manual data handling. Report generation accelerated by approximately 1,800%, enabling multi-day reporting tasks to be completed almost instantly. The RADA AMS adoption experience demonstrates that sustainable digital transformation in upstream operations is best achieved through phased, workflow-aligned and gradual adoption, providing a more resilient and scalable pathway for digitalization than rapid, large-scale technology rollouts.
