Abstract

Global climate change has and will continue to shape infectious disease in insects. The diversity and abundance of insects underscores both the importance and challenge in studying their rapidly changing disease dynamics. Here, we survey recent studies that have made headway in revealing the multifaceted effects of climate change on parasite infections in insects. Researchers are investigating the response to infection through within-host mechanisms, between-host dynamics, and, largely still developing, coevolutionary trajectories of insects and their parasites. We highlight research frameworks that integrate multiple abiotic (e.g., temperature or humidity) and biotic (e.g., genotype or demography) factors. However, faced with an increasingly severe and erratic climate future, work remains to develop the research approaches that best balance complexity and generalizability to forecast eco-evolutionary infectious disease outcomes in insects.
