Abstract

The Qingdao Amphioxus Municipal Nature Reserve (QAMR), located on the coast of the Yellow Sea, is an important habitat for Qingdao amphioxus (Branchiostoma belcheri tsingtauense), which is listed as endangered on the China Species Red List. Phytoplankton community shifts reflect environmental conditions and may influence food resources for benthic filter-feeders. This study examined the relative dominance patterns of diatoms versus dinoflagellates and their associations with environmental factors using data from four seasonal cruises in 2018. Diatoms dominated throughout the year, accounting for 86.8–98.7% of total abundance and 82.4–88.6% of taxon richness. Both metrics were lowest in summer and highest in autumn. The relative dominance shifts were associated with the combined effects of water-column physical structure and nutrient stoichiometry rather than nutrient concentration alone. Summer stratification may have favored dinoflagellates, whereas autumn vertical mixing and nutrient resupply reinforced diatom dominance. The QAMR remained diatom-dominated, with no clear shift toward dinoflagellate dominance. These findings provide baseline data for understanding seasonal variations in nearshore phytoplankton communities and may inform ecological status assessments and B. belcheri tsingtauense habitat management.

Environmental drivers of phytoplankton community structure and diatom size restructuring in the Yellow Sea.

The Yellow Sea (YS) is a productive marginal sea undergoing substantial environmental change associated with warming and hydrographic variability. We analyzed total and size-fractionated phytoplankton assemblages using high-performance liquid chromatography pigment analysis and microscopy across 12 seasonal surveys in...

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages elucidate ecological succession and test mineralogy in a newly colonized mangrove of the Subarnarekha estuary in the northeastern Bay of Bengal.

The Subarnarekha estuary, along with its associated mudflats and mangrove ecosystems, represents a relatively recent geomorphological development on the eastern coast of India, where mangroves have naturally colonized newly formed mudflats during the last decade. This study aimed to assess how benthic foraminiferal ass...

Post-impoundment changes in fish diversity and community structure of the Dikrong River, Arunachal Pradesh: a comparative assessment between 2000–2001 and 2025–2026

A study carried out on the dam impacted Dikrong River, which is one of the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh, suggests that the river has undergone significant ecological alteration following the commissioning of the Sopo dam in 2018 and increasing anthropogenic pressures. The present study atte...

Periphytic algae of subtropical Andean streams in Argentina along an altitudinal gradient: a taxonomic and functional trait approach

Abstract: Aim The research aimed to determine how environmental variables and seasonal hydrology influence biological organization by integrating taxonomic metrics with functional ecology. Methods Six streams were sampled during summer and winter. Physicochemical parameters were measured alongside periphytic algae coll...
