Abstract
Aim: This study evaluated the comparative effects of organic fertilizer (poultry manure) and inorganic fertilizer (NPK 15-15-15) on the growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Nigeria.
Methodology: The experiment was conducted using a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three treatments: poultry manure, NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer, and a control with no fertilizer application, each replicated five times. The growth parameters measured included plant height and number of leaves, while yield per plant was assessed at harvest. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 5% probability level.
Results: Fertilizer application significantly (P < 0.05) improved maize growth and yield compared with the control. Inorganic fertilizer recorded the highest mean plant height (93.0 cm), number of leaves (17.0), and yield per plant (1.91 kg), followed by organic fertilizer (86.2 cm, 15.2 leaves, and 1.36 kg), while the control recorded the lowest values. The ANOVA results indicated significant differences among treatments for all measured parameters.
Conclusion: Both organic and inorganic fertilizers significantly improved maize growth and yield under the conditions of this study. Although NPK 15-15-15 produced higher growth and yield values, poultry manure remains an important nutrient source for improving soil quality and supporting sustainable crop production. An integrated nutrient management approach that combines organic and inorganic fertilizers is recommended to enhance maize productivity while maintaining long-term soil fertility in the study area.
A field experiment was carried out during the wet season of 2026 at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. The aim is to examine the response of maize growth and biomass yield to inorganic (NPK) and complimentary organic fertilizer treatments. Initial soil samples were collected randomly from the experimental site and analyzed for some nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, pH) and microbial (bacteria, fungi) population. The experiment was carried out using four treatments, organic, inorganic, organic plus inorganic and control with each treatment replicated three times. Each plot has a dimension of 3 m x 4 m. Agronomic parameters measured were plant height (cm), stem circumference (cm) and biomass yield (g). The results shows that at 10WAS), plot treated with organic plus inorganic fertilizer had the highest stem height (284.67cm); stem circumference (11.32 cm); and leaf dry weight (69.50g). The control treatment which had no fertilizer application recorded the least value of all agronomic parameters measured. The use of the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer is therefore recommended for smallholder farmers for increased crop yield and soil fertility improvement under intensive continuous cultivation.

A field experiment comparing the effects of cow dung, chicken droppings, and a mixture of both on the germination and growth parameters of maize (Zea mays) was conducted at the Botanical Garden, University of Maiduguri, located in the North-Eastern region of Nigeria. Treatments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The variables assessed included the number of germinated seedlings, plant height, number of leaves, and plant diameter. Data collected were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and mean values were separated using the LSD test at a significance level of five percent. The results revealed that the application of organic manures, particularly chicken droppings (14.00), positively influenced maize germination and performance compared to N.P.K (2.00) treatments. Specifically, plots treated with chicken droppings exhibited the highest number of leaves (5.33), tallest plant height (49.17), and largest plant diameter (3.97) per plant. These findings suggest that chicken droppings have the potential to enhance the growth parameters of maize.

The sustainable management of soil fertility is essential for improving common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) productivity under the semi-arid conditions of Afghanistan. This study evaluated the comparative effects of two organic fertilizers, inorganic fertilizer (NPK), and their integrated application on the growth and yield performance of common bean during the 2025 growing season at the Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kabul University. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six fertilizer treatments and three replications. Growth traits, yield components, grain yield, biological yield, and harvest index were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and treatment means were separated by Tukey’s HSD test at the 5% probability level. Fertilizer treatments significantly influenced most growth and yield parameters. The integrated application of 50% OF-1 + 50% NPK (T5) consistently produced superior plant growth, increased yield components, and achieved the highest grain yield, biological yield, and harvest index compared with the sole application of organic or inorganic fertilizers and the unfertilized control. The improved performance of the integrated treatment was attributed to enhanced nutrient availability and more efficient nutrient utilization throughout the crop growth period. These findings demonstrate that integrated nutrient management is a sustainable and effective strategy for increasing common bean productivity under semi-arid agroecological conditions. Future studies should evaluate long-term effects of integrated nutrient management under diverse agroecological conditions.

A field experiment was conducted during the 2026 dry season at the Dryland Teaching and Research Farm of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, to evaluate the response of maize (Zea mays L.) variety Oba Super 11 to slow-release organo-mineral fertilizer (SROMF) formulations under the Sudan Savannah agro-ecological zone of Nigeria. The study was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five fertilizer treatments: (i) mineral fertilizer (NPK 20:10:10), (ii) NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10), (iii) NPK SROM fertilizer (15:10:10), (iv) NPK SROM fertilizer (12:6:6), and (v) a control (no fertilizer), replicated three times. Data were collected on growth and yield parameters. Results showed that fertilizer treatments significantly (p ≤ 0.05) influenced all growth and yield parameters measured. At 9 weeks after sowing (WAS), the tallest plants (181.5 cm) were recorded under NPK organo-mineral fertilizer (12:6:6), while the shorter plants (83.1 cm) were recorded in the control plot. Grain yield was highest in NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10), producing 6.6 t ha⁻¹, followed by the mineral fertilizer treatment (5.5 t ha⁻¹), while the control had the lowest yield (1.1 t ha⁻¹). Similarly, the highest dry matter yield (6.6 t ha⁻¹) was obtained from the NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10) treatment. The study concludes that slow-release organo-mineral fertilizers significantly enhanced efficient nutrient utilization and in turn improved growth and yield performance of maize under Sudan Savannah conditions, with the NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10) formulation showing superior grain yield performance and is therefore recommended as a sustainable nutrient management strategy for improving maize productivity while potentially reducing nutrient losses under different soil textural classes.

A field experiment was conducted during the rabi seasons of 2024–25 and 2025–26 at the Experimental Farm, School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, RIMT University, Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, India, to evaluate the effects of inorganic fertilisers, organic manures, zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄), and Azotobacter on the growth, yield, and economics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The experiment was laid out in a Randomised Block Design (RBD) comprising twelve treatments with three replications. The treatments consisted of different combinations of the recommended dose of fertilisers (RDF), farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, poultry manure, ZnSO₄, and Azotobacter. The results revealed that integrated nutrient management significantly (P ≤ 0.05) improved plant height, leaf area index, tiller density, dry matter accumulation, grain yield, straw yield, harvest index, and economic returns compared with the control. Among the treatments, 75% RDF + 1.25 t ha⁻¹ vermicompost + 20 kg ZnSO₄ ha⁻¹ + 5 kg Azotobacter ha⁻¹ (T₁₁) recorded the highest grain yield of 4856.40 kg ha⁻¹ and 4912.00 kg ha⁻¹ during 2024–25 and 2025–26, respectively. The same treatment also produced the highest net returns of ₹70,493 ha⁻¹ and ₹72,546 ha⁻¹ during the respective years. These findings indicate that the integrated application of 75% RDF, vermicompost, ZnSO₄, and Azotobacter can effectively enhance wheat productivity and profitability while reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers under the agro-climatic conditions of Punjab, India.

This study evaluated the effects of banana peel liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and chicken manure on the growth and yield components of soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivated in Andisol soil. The experiment was conducted from December 2020 to April 2021 at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara, using a factorial randomized block design with two factors: four doses of banana peel liquid organic fertilizer (0, 50, 100, and 150 mL polybag⁻¹) and four rates of chicken manure (0, 5, 10, and 15 t ha⁻¹). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that banana peel liquid organic fertilizer significantly increased the number of branches and the weight of 100 seeds but had no significant effect on plant height, stem diameter, or the number of pods. Chicken manure significantly increased stem diameter, number of branches, number of pods, and weight of 100 seeds, whereas its effect on plant height was not significant. No significant interaction was observed between banana peel liquid organic fertilizer and chicken manure for any of the observed variables. These findings indicate that both organic fertilizers independently improved soybean growth and yield components in Andisol soil, although their combined application did not produce a synergistic effect. Further studies involving comprehensive soil characterization, nutrient uptake, and economic evaluation are recommended to better understand the agronomic potential of banana peel liquid organic fertilizer under different environmental conditions.
