Molecular Developments in Antimicrobials Using Structural Analysis and SAR Studies

Sep 2026 · Mini-Reviews in Organic Chemistry · 0 citations

Abstract

Antimicrobials are crucial for both the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases because they prevent bacteria from growing and surviving through a number of mechanisms. Developing successful treatment plans requires an understanding of how they work. The use of antibiotics and antiviral medications is very challenging because bacterial and viral infections are a major cause of illness and death these days. This article examines recent developments as well as the state of antimicrobial agent design and development. Along with structural analyses, the relationship between synthetic drugs’ molecular structure and biological activity (SAR) is investigated. Additionally, it examines a range of strategies, such as bacteriophage therapy, metal-based antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides, and compounds derived from plants, as possible future treatments to fight antibiotic resistance. The study also examines modern strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of antimicrobial medications, including the synthesis of new compounds from natural sources, bacteriophage genetic modification, and peptide sequence refinement. Its ultimate objective is to highlight the critical need for international action to combat antibiotic resistance while shedding more light on antimicrobials and their role in public health.
