TL;DR
Routine oncology records capture clinical data more consistently than SDOH, providing rationale for the prospective GEO-CRC phase focused on standardized SDOH collection and outcome evaluation.
Abstract
Background
Social determinants of health (SDOH) may influence cancer outcomes, although their integration in routine clinical records remains limited.
Methods
This retrospective two-center cohort included adults with histologically confirmed advanced colorectal adenocarcinoma diagnosed in 2023. Clinical variables and prespecified SDOH were extracted from electronic medical records. The primary endpoint was documentation completeness for each SDOH variable.
Results
Forty-four patients were included. Clinical variables were consistently documented, whereas SDOH showed substantial missing data. Missingness was moderate for type of residence (20.5%), cohabitation (27.3%), caregiving support (27.3%), and marital status (29.5%), but high for social isolation (88.6%), education (95.5%), chronic stress (97.7%), and perceived job-loss risk (97.7%). Mean missing SDOH data per patient was 48.3% (± 22).
Conclusions
Routine oncology records capture clinical data more consistently than SDOH. These findings provide rationale for the prospective GEO-CRC phase focused on standardized SDOH collection and outcome evaluation.
Social determinants or drivers of health (SDoH) provide a broad perspective of influences on patient health. An association between poorer SDoH and worse outcomes for kidney stone disease exists. Many electronic health records (EHR) contain an intake feature to record SDoH data; however, no data exist on the use...

Objective Social determinants of health (SDoH) account for 80% of health outcomes and, with social support and perceived stress, shape treatment experiences and quality of life in gynecologic cancer. This study characterized the prevalence of unmet SDoH needs among patients with newly diagnosed gynecologic cancer and e...

Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), diagnosed before age 50, is one of leading cancer diagnoses among young adults in the United States (U.S.). Social determinants of health (SDoH) are important factors influencing CRC risk and diagnosis. Individuals facing disadvantages in 1) healthcare access/quality, 2) edu...

The influence of socioeconomic determinants of health on early gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) remains understudied. We evaluated the association between median household income (MHI), treatment patterns, and survival in T1aN0M0 GAC. Using the SEER-17 Research Plus database (2004–2021), we identified 3,792 patients with T...
