Influence of Entrepreneurship Education on the Performance of SMEs in Tanzania

Aug 2026 · East African Journal of Business and Economics · 0 citations

Abstract

This study examines the influence of entrepreneurship education on the financial performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in Moshi Municipality, Tanzania. A mixed research approach with concurrent design was employed, collecting data from 145 SME owner-managers and 4 entrepreneurship experts through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Findings reveal that all respondents recognise entrepreneurship education as crucial for SME performance, with 93.8% confirming its importance for business longevity. However, 72.4% of surveyed enterprises experienced low performance below 50% ROI, generating monthly incomes below the national minimum wage. The study concludes that while entrepreneurship education positively impacts SME survival and success, it is insufficient alone without complementary structural supports, including access to finance, technological capabilities, and supportive regulatory environments. Recommendations emphasise tailor-made training programs, enhanced financial access, and integration of entrepreneurship education across all academic disciplines to foster sustainable SME development in Tanzania
